SAN LEANDRO (BCN) - Police in San Leandro are trying to locate a 21-year-old man who they believe is one of three men who robbed a convenience store last week and then shot at an off-duty police officer who was following them, police Lt. Pete Ballew said Thursday.

Santana Porter is suspected of being involved in the May 27 incident, which has already led to the arrest of the other two suspects.

The armed robbery occurred at about 9:20 p.m. that day at a Quik Stop located at 1001 MacArthur Blvd., Ballew said.

An off-duty officer driving by the store witnessed the robbery and followed the suspects as they ran down St. Marys Avenue to Oakes Boulevard with about $100 from the Quik Stop, according to police.

The suspects got into a brown Mercury Topaz driven by a third suspect while the officer followed and called San Leandro police dispatch.

The suspects apparently realized they were being followed and turned onto Harrison Street from Callan Avenue. They stopped and waited for the officer, and as he turned the corner, the suspects shot at his vehicle, striking it several times, police said.

Responding officers saw the suspects' car driving away from the area and began a pursuit. The chase ended when the vehicle stopped in the 14600 block of Washington Avenue, where one man, Ramiro Medrano, 20, of San Leandro, was taken into custody. The two others escaped.

A gun was recovered from the car, Ballew said.

Ryan Garvey, a 26-year-old Berkeley man believed to be one of the two suspects who escaped, was arrested on Friday morning when he showed up for a court appearance in Oakland related to a separate incident.

Garvey was taken into custody in Department 9 of the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse after an Alameda County sheriff's deputy recognized him from a bulletin San Leandro police had distributed to other law enforcement agencies.

All three men have been charged with attempted murder, robbery, and discharging a firearm at a vehicle, according to police.

Police are still searching for Porter, who is known to frequent parts of unincorporated San Leandro.

Porter has a warrant out for his arrest, is on probation, and should be considered armed and dangerous, Ballew said.
