A 23-year-old former University of Virginia student has been arrested on child pornography charges.
Dustin James Lapradd was a student at UVa’s Curry School of Education but is not currently enrolled at UVa, according to Carol Wood, school spokeswoman.
Wood could not say what year Lapradd was. It’s unclear whether Lapradd plans to return or if he would even be allowed back.
Furthermore, authorities could not say whether Lapradd was studying to become a teacher or whether he had been working with children in a student-teacher or similar capacity.
The Moneta resident was charged Tuesday with 10 counts of possession of child pornography, according to UVa police Lt. Melissa Fielding.
If convicted on all charges, Lapradd faces up to 50 years in prison.
An Internet Crimes Against Children task force handled the investigation, which was headed by UVa police.
Police executed a search warrant on April 10 at Hench dorm on Massie Road, where Lapradd lived, according to the warrant.
Police seized a computer and other electronic devices at the apartment. The IP address allegedly traced to Lapradd “stood out because it is one of the most active IP addresses according to the ICAC task force for the Charlottesville area for downloading and distributing child pornography.”
ICAC uses an automated program that accesses peer-to-peer child pornography networks. Using the program, ICAC linked the IP address for Lapradd’s computer to 40 child pornography files between Sept. 28 and March 29, according to the search warrant.
One file included a color video of a naked 3- to 4-year-old girl being sexually abused in a bathtub, according to the search warrant.
Lapradd remains free on $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear today in Albemarle General District Court.
Charlottesville and Albe-marle police also have investigators with ICAC and helped with the investigation.
