Tyler Quick (18) charged with felony assault for setting a man's pants on fire

FERNDALE — A Pleasant Ridge teen accused of severely burning a man's upper leg while he was passed out from drinking pleaded guilty to two underage drinking charges Thursday.

Tyler Quick, 18, still faces a charge of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, a 10-year felony. He has been jailed on $25,000 cash bond since he was arraigned March 27.

"Mr. Quick confessed to setting the guy on fire," said Ferndale police Detective John Thull. "It was supposed to be a practical joke, like a hot foot, but it was a vicious act with serious consequences. The suspect also decided to paint the victim's face with a girl's makeup before burning him."

Quick was already on probation for underage drinking when he was ticketed for the same offense for the third time at the house of John Soring, 51, of Ferndale on March 16.

Soring's brother called police to the house. Soring was drinking with several teens including Quick, police said. The brother told police some teens had been taking advantage of Soring, who was ticketed with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly supplying teens with alcohol.

Police said Soring had a severe burn of several inches on his inner thigh that had destroyed skin and

muscle. Investigators said they later learned Quick burned Soring during a drinking bout the previous week.

Soring, who police said has an alcohol problem, passed out on a sofa and one of his legs was raised. Police said Quick placed a lighted candle on the sofa beneath Soring's leg. The candle flame eventually ignited his pants and Soring awoke and put out the fire, police said.

Police said Soring suffered third-degree burns but didn't go to the hospital until police showed up at his house March 16.

On Thursday, Quick was sentenced to five days in jail for violating probation and given credit for five of the days he has been jailed already.

Quick also pleaded guilty to a third misdemeanor offense of underage drinking and is set to be sentenced May 7.

Mich. teen gets probation for burning man's groin
PONTIAC, Mich. — A teenager in suburban Detroit has apologized for lighting a man's pants on fire and causing a third-degree burn to the man's groin. Eighteen-year-old Tyler Quick spoke Tuesday before the judge sentenced him to probation. He pleaded guilty last month to assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder.

Police say Quick attended a party at the Ferndale home of a 51-year-old man, who passed out during the party.

The Detroit Free Press reports Quick told the judge he painted the man's face with makeup, then put a lit candle on the man's pants to help illuminate his work.

If Quick successfully completes probation, the conviction may be removed from his record.
