Home invaders kidnap child

May 5, 2009

SAN BERNARDINO-- Authorities along the U.S.-Mexico border have been put on alert for any sign of a 3-year-old San Bernardino boy who was reported snatched at gunpoint from his family's home.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert late Sunday for Briant Rodriguez, sheriff's officials said.

The child was taken from the house in the 8000 block of Pedley Road during a home invasion robbery around 2:30 Sunday afternoon, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokesperson Cindy Beavers.

The two suspects, armed with handguns, tied up the mother, Rosa "Maria" Millana, and four other children and ransacked the home before escaping with the child and an unknown amount of cash, Beavers said.

One of the children, an 8-year-old boy, freed himself and then untied the rest of the family, Beavers said.

I was watching this on the news yesterday. Ugh, it was a home invasion, they tied up the whole family took what they could find and then took her youngest child. One of the witness says, the invadors were talking to outside people on the phone saying "there's nothing here, we're taking the boy."

I have a feeling they went into the wrong home. :( I feel so bad for this little boy. It didn't seem like this family had any gangsters in it, and they say they don't know of any beef they may have with anyone.

This was a moment where I wish this family had a gun :/ maybe they could of saved the little boy?

this news releash has more info

SAN BERNARDINO - The mother of a 3-year-old boy kidnapped Sunday afternoon in San Bernardino had a simple message this morning.

"She just wants her baby back," said Nancy Vargas, a family friend who translated Rosa Millana's words from Spanish to English.

This morning, Vargas gave reporters at the small, single-family, home in the 8000 block of Pedley Road an account of what happened.

Millana and her five children were at home Sunday afternoon and preparing to go to the park. Her husband wasn't home. Two gunmen barged in.

"They told her it was a stick up," Vargas said.
Story continues below
Briant Rodriguez, 3, San Bernardino, was kidnapped by two men during a home invasion robbery on Sunday, May 3, 2009

The men ordered the family to lie on the floor and began searching the living room and the rest of the house, Vargas said.

"They didn't find anything. There was nothing there," Vargas said.

Using red tape, the men tied up Millana and her children, except for 3-year-old Briant Rodriguez.

"They told them he was taking the baby to Mexico and going to kill him," Vargas said.

One of the children, an 8-year-old boy, escaped from the tape and ran toward the door to look for his brother, but his mother told him to stay down, Vargas said.

During the robbery, one of the men was talking to someone on a walkie talkie, Vargas said. Millana suspected there was a man outside, but she never saw a car, Vargas said.

Millana fought back tears in between her words and, at times, sobbed. At one point, she walked away from reporters and leaned on a car parked in the backyard.

The mother's full name is Maria Rosalina Millana, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Ells said. He did not know her age.

The boy's father, Raul Rodriguez, declined to comment this morning as he sat in his backyard with his head down. Ells said Rodriguez was at work during the time of the crime.

Millana's teenage son, Benjamin Barasa, also described the kidnapping and robbery.

"I was really scared," Barasa said. "My heart was pounding hard."

Briant, 3, loves Spider-man and SpongeBob SquarePants, Benjamin said. The two had watched SpongeBob earlier Sunday, he said.

"They don't know these people. They've never seen them before," Vargas said.

The boy was confused, but not distraught, during the abduction, Vargas said.

"He wasn't crying, he didn't know what was going on," Vargas said.

Though an Amber Alert has been issued to police, the alert isn't being flashed today on freeway signs.

San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said the alert wasn't on the freeways because investigators have no description of a getaway vehicle.

San Bernardino County sheriff's detectives and FBI agents are searching for the gunmen.

The motive remains unclear, San Bernardino County sheriff's investigators say. The FBI has joined the investigation. No ransom demands have been received, detectives say.

Investigators don't know the motive, according to San Bernardino County sheriff's officials.

"There hasn't been a demand for a ransom," sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said of the abduction. "Unknown why this family (was targeted) and why this child."

Though the aging neighborhood has a worn appearance, the house has a green lawn and a row of pink and red roses in bloom. The family lives across the street from Monterey Elementary School. A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy sat in a patrol car outside the house.

Neighbors expressed support for the family and concern for what some described as a high level of crime in the area.

"It's all over the place," 60-year-old Cindy Greenleaf said, recalling gang activity, shootings, rapes and drug abuse in the neighborhood just northwest of San Bernardino International Airport.

But mainly, her thoughts were on the missing boy.

"I just hope and pray they find him," she said.

Jeff Smith, a 30-year resident of the neighborhood who lives next door, said he doesn't know the family well but voiced concern for them.

"I know (that) the parents of that kid, they're both heart-broken," he said

The police are already seriously doubting their story. You can tell by what they describe and the way they're releasing information. It's probably one of two scenarios:
Child was kidnapped by people they owe money
More likely, the kid is dead and this is the cover story.
No 'big ticket' items were taken from the house, just untraceable stuff like cash. And why would they say "Oh we're taking him to Mexico to kill him'. That doesn't make sense. You don't abduct children from poor families and hold them for ransom, and there hasn't even been a ransom claim. Sounds like a story to cover up the kid already being dead.

I agree that this story doesn't add up. I am willing to bet that the family knows the abductors.

One of my favorite movies is "Man on Fire" and this story sounds very similar to that story line. How sad.

Why you bringing up crap like this? If this story is true, it was 2:30 in the afternoon and they came bursting through the door. Only way a gun would have made a difference is if the mom was facing the door they busted through and she had a loaded gun in hand ready to fire. Very plausible scenario for a mother of 5 getting ready to take her kids to the park.

I guess the kids could have been armed as well and starting shooting once they busted in. Or maybe she could have just did a matrix style move to get into her bedroom, grab her gun and then shoot and kill the attackers instantly with 2 pinpoint head shots while avoiding shooting her own kids. Oh and her faith in jesus would stop any bullets that the gunmen may have fired from hitting her or any of her 5 children.

Don't bring up irrelevant, dumb bullshit. :D

Yeah, too bad this didn't end up a giant shootout, because then we would KNOW the kid was dead.

They found the boy!!

He was wandering around Mexico alone when police found him.

This is an odd story. It's one that doesnt' make sense, I'm still thinking these invaders
were at the wrong house.

I can't even imagine how happy this mother is right now, and the boy.
He was gone a total of 2 weeks.
YAY! I'm happy he was found.

Update.......The kidnappers had shaved his head. I'm so glad he was found.

Abducted Boy Reunited With MotherBy DAISY NGUYEN, AP
(May 16) - A 3-year-old boy abducted from his family home in San Bernardino nearly two weeks ago by two armed men was reunited with his mother Saturday after police found him wandering a Mexican border town's streets, sheriff's officials said.

Mexican officials found 3-year-old Briant Rodriguez, shown here in an undated family photo, wandering the streets alone late Thursday, nearly two weeks after he was abducted from his California home. Briant and his mother were reunited in the California border city Calexico on Saturday.

The reunion took place in the California border city of Calexico, a day after detectives and FBI agents received a call from officials in the neighboring Mexican city of Mexicali saying they found a boy that could be Briant Rodriguez, San Bernardino County sheriff's Lt. Rick Ells said.
Ells said a municipal police officer in Mexicali found the boy walking the streets by himself late Thursday. The officer initially thought the child was from the neighborhood and took him to several houses seeking his family before leaving him in child protective custody, Ells said.
Mexican authorities did not realize who the child was and didn't issue an Amber alert until Friday afternoon, he said.
Ells said Briant's mother, Maria Rosalina Millan, and investigators boarded a plane to Calexico Friday night. An FBI agent crossed the border and handled immigration paperwork for the boy, who holds dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship, he said.
Skip over this content The FBI agent brought Briant back across the border for the reunion Saturday, Ells said.
Ells had no details about the child's condition or how long he had been left alone.
Investigators were continuing to investigate why Briant was abducted and why his family was targeted. Millan said two men burst into her home on May 3, tied up the family, stole money and other property then left with her youngest child.
The kidnappers had not demanded a ransom and the initial investigation pointed to the kidnappers being strangers to the family.
Federal and local investigators were looking at several theories, including that the Spanish-speaking kidnappers were from Mexico and may have had ties to organized crime there.
Authorities later released a photo of two men they said were the kidnappers. The blurred image was taken from a surveillance camera in a home-improvement store as the men bought tape believed to have been used to bind Millan and her children.
The family lives in a modest, single-story home in a lower-income area abutting the city of San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
Associated Press writers Daisy Nguyen in Los Angeles and Mariana Martinez and Alexandra Olson in Mexico City contributed to this report.
