LAKELAND, Fla. – A father shot and killed his wife and two of his sons — one 5 months old and the other 7 years old — before killing himself in the front yard of their home on Sunday night, authorities said.

Another son, a 13-year-old, was pursued through the garage by his father, evaded several gunshots, and made it safely to a neighbor's house, Polk County Sheriff's Department spokesman Scott Wilder said in a statement.

Investigators believe Troy Ryan Bellar, 34, and his wife, Wendy Bellar, 31, were in a domestic dispute about 9:30 p.m. at their home in Lakeland, located between Tampa and Orlando.

When the wife tried to leave the home with two of the children, deputies said Bellar opened fire with a 7.62 mm rifle and killed his wife, 5-month-old Zack James Bellar and 7-year-old Ryan Patrick Bellar in the front porch area.

Investigators were still trying to determine the sequence of the shooting, but after the shooting began, 13-year-old Nathan Bellar ran from the home and was chased by his father, who fired several shots at him. The boy was being placed with family members.

No neighbors appeared to have been injured by gunfire, according to a canvass by deputies.

Wilder said the husband had been arrested twice in the county: on suspicion of aggravated assault in 1994 and suspicion of driving under the influence in 1999. Wendy Bellar was arrested in March on suspicion of domestic battery.

"This is one of the most tragic, senseless and horrific crimes we have investigated," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.

"You don't have stuff like that in this neighborhood," neighbor Tammy Womble told The Ledger newspaper in Lakeland.

"It was just gunshots going off. We didn't hear screams or anything," she said.

The 13 yr old son must  have been so friggin scared, having his dad chase him through the garage trying to kill him. I really hope someone gets him help. I didn't have time to see if the husband or his wife had a myspace, sorry.

RIP Mom & Kids. What a fucked up world we live in.

Her husband didn't have one - her last comment is from someone telling her to tell Troy to sign up for a myspace account.

Bellar's listed interests include: "Learning everything. Listening to and playing music. Reading and writing literature (especially poetry, prose). Everything about math and its perfection. Oh, yeah, and I hate sports."

She said her son Ryan's autism "gives him little language." She said she graduated from Pine Ridge High School in Deltona in 1996, attended Polk Community College in Winter Haven from several years and had been attending the University of South Florida, where she was majoring in English.

I KNEW he had autism. I had a feeling because of this picture:

Because he isn't looking at the camera.

This story keeps getting sadder and sadder :(

Whatever the challenges are, you just have to deal with them.

There is nothing that could happen to me that would prompt me to kill my children. How awfully selfish.

Teen son who escaped helps unravel Fla. shootings

LAKELAND, Fla. – A 13-year-old boy who watched his father kill his stepmother and two younger brothers before aiming the rifle at him is helping investigators reconstruct what happened in their Florida home.

The teen was staying with his grandparents Monday, a day after investigators said his father, Troy Ryan Bellar, 34, shot and killed his wife, Wendy Bellar, 31, and then their 5-month-old and 8-year-old sons following an argument.

Bellar then chased his oldest son, Nathan, through the home's cluttered garage and took aim, but tripped on a bicycle before he could get off another fatal shot. As Nathan ran screaming to the safety of a neighbor's house, his father killed himself in the front lawn.

Detectives praised the surviving teen for being helpful and answering their questions despite the horror he witnessed.

"His entire family is gone," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, who said the teenager cried some and was very quiet. "What he witnessed, what he was engaged in, most people in this world will never witness."

His father and stepmother had fought before, but Nathan Bellar told investigators he had no reason to believe their latest exchange would turn violent.

But then Wendy Bellar carried 5-month-old Zack James Bellar out the front door in a car seat when her husband followed them with a 7.62 mm rifle, the sheriff said. She intended to take the infant and 8-year-old Ryan Patrick Bellar to her in-laws for the night but was shot down on the screen porch.

Investigators said they had not found any suicide note, and a motive remained unclear for the killings in Lakeland, between Tampa and Orlando.

"They argued a little bit, but nothing significant," Judd said.

It wasn't the first argument for the couple who'd been married for a 10 years. According to an arrest affidavit, Troy Bellar accused his wife of hitting, punching and scratching him in March. Wendy Bellar was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, and the case was pending.

After Nathan safely reached a home nearby, a neighbor relayed information from him to a 911 dispatcher.

"A boy's here at my house that lives there and says that his dad shot his mom and there's a baby there," the neighbor, who was not identified, told a 911 operator.

Deputies arrived at a horrific scene: Wendy Bellar and her two young sons dead from gunshot wounds in their screened-in porch and their father lifeless in the front yard. A preliminary investigation indicates that more than 10 rounds were fired in all.

Investigators say Troy Bellar ran a home remodeling and handyman business, which next-door neighbor Doug Lane said seemed to do a steady business despite the economic downturn.

Judd couldn't say if the family was experiencing any financial difficulties.

Records show the husband had been arrested twice in the county, on suspicion of armed robbery and aggravated battery in 1994 and for driving under the influence in 1999. He was convicted of petit/retail theft in the first case and of driving under the influence in the second

People should really have to take a psych eval before they procreate. Jesus shit, they had to call references, do a background check, had me file an evaluation, conduct an interview, etc., before they let me adopt my fucking cat. This was a year after I had a child.

I hope that little boy can somehow find the strength to move on with his life, but I can't even imagine. Hopefully someday mental illness will be treated as a real disease and not like fucking leprosy (bad example cuz I know people still get that, but POINT)- not that it would be the end-all to these types of things, but it would definitely prevent their frequency.

"A boy's here at my house that lives there and says that his dad shot his mom and there's a baby there." Oh my fucking god.

This shit will never stop breaking my heart, for so many reasons. RIP family.

Re: Man kills wife and 2 kids, 3rd child escapes.

This is so sad. So Nathan wasn't her son biologically and she was going to leave him behind? Add to that the poor boy witnesses his father kill the woman who raised him (and was going to leave him behind) and his brothers. The fear in him must have been overwhelming but then he sees his dad turn the gun on him and actually shoot as he runs away? Only to later hear the shot that took his last living family member? I just wanna run there and hug him! Sad thing is Florida has been dubbed the second most miserable state to live in. I agree and I've only lived here 3 years.
