An 18-year-old Smyrna man has been charged in connection with the death of a Smyrna man with whom he had argued.

Smyrna police charged Marvin J. Poore, of Lincoln Street, with one count of manslaughter in the death of 40-year-old Sterling Smith.

Lt. Norman Wood said officers found Smith lying in the road with severe head injuries at 12:44 a.m. April 20.

He was taken to Kent General Hospital for evaluation and later transferred to Christiana Hospital, where he slipped into a coma and died Thursday.

An autopsy by the state Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death as blunt-force trauma to the head. Officers initially canvassed the area, interviewing area residents who had seen Smith lying in the street. Through those witnesses and an anonymous tip, officers identified Poore as a potential suspect, Wood said.

"There was some type of disagreement between the two," Wood said Monday.

According to court records, Poore said he had argued with Smith last Sunday afternoon.

About 12:30 a.m. Monday, Smith showed up at Poore's house and knocked on the door, police said in court records.

Poore answered the door, asked Smith what he was doing on his porch and shoved the victim.

Smith allegedly fell backward off the porch and hit his head on the curb, police said. Poore told officers he went inside the house and checked on Smith later and saw him trying to get to his feet, falling and hitting his face on the asphalt.

The suspect said Smith was trying to get to his feet and fell twice more, both times hitting his head on the asphalt, police said. Poore was arrested Friday and charged in Smith's death.

He was committed to the Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in lieu of $40,000 bail.
