I have a really difficult time with religion. Because of everything you just said. It all just seems inconceivable to me. That and I don't understand WHY things have to happen to children or good people. There is just too much bad shit in this world for me to believe in a higher power.

I'm watching this 20/20 special on Heaven, and it seriously makes me sad. I know some members here are religious, so I'll start off with saying I don't mean you. Anyway......It makes me sad to see people sitting there and falling for these snake-oil salesmen. It all seems like such a big con. They basically sell you a product that you never get.

I mean a grown man was sitting there talking to Barbara Walters telling her about this magical place where all her loved ones are going to be. And it's great and good and magic.... This shit would be cute coming from a 5-year old, but not someone who is 55. It's seriously psych ward shit to me. I just DO NOT get it.

And then they speak to a Mormon and ask if someone isn't Mormon, do they get in. And they asked the Evangelical the same thing. This is something else I don't understand about religion. If you really, really believe in your religion, don't you snicker under your breath thinking everyone else is wrong?

Now they're talking to this woman who's saying that children need to hear these things about an afterlife to make them more comfortable about death. But I'm asking why do adults need to believe this too?
as an adult i've only been to a handful of services outside of funerals. i had to restrain myself from yelling 'hail satan' at my cousin's funeral. mostly i just had to shut myself off. the funeral was in the right place, it should have been held in my grandma's church where his mother in law also was a member. strange that they call church goers members?

when the pastor talked about satan taking my cousin from us, from himself, i just cringed. no offense to any people here, but who buys that stuff? forget that his uncle, maternal grandfather and maternal cousin's also committed suicide. satan just has it out for my family?

So does that mean: Satan > God

Or does it mean that God doesn't care about that side of your family? I mean God could have stopped it but didn't?

If God cannot,or will not help, then doesn't it make more sense to pray to Satan and ask for forgiveness?

When I was a kid, I dont think I ever believed it. It actually made me feel worse. I was never comforted by it at all.
My uncle was killed by a drunk driver when I was 5. He wasnt a church goer, and I overheard my other Uncle and his wife discussing how he had never been saved and wasnt going to get into heaven. It made me angry. They were saying that this man who had never been anything but kind and decent to anyone wasnt going to go to heaven, but the guy who got drunk and killed him might if he asks for forgiveness? Fuck That. I was so angry and discomforted and sad.
If heaven isnt a place you can get to just by being a good person throughout your life, but can get there for just for being repentant for the bad shit you HAVE done, Why would anyone want to go there? I know I dont.

I think you summed that up quite nicely.

Religion was never presented to me as a child in any way. I had no idea what religion or spirituality meant. Living in the bible belt at 10 or so, someone asked me if I was a Christian. I didn't know wtf she was asking. Asked my mom, learned some junk, asked her to buy me a bible and take me to church. Went to church maybe 3 times, and felt like a bad person for the first time in my life. Decided that shit was for the birds, and asked my mom to buy me some books on Wicca. Studied that for a while. Didn't hate it. Eventually decided religion just wasn't for me. /cool story bro

I have religion and I don't try to convert anyone to it. I think everyone has their own path. I believe in God, for my own reasons.
On a funny side note, there was something on Pinterest about Mitt Romney and Mormon Magical Undies and I was intrigued so I googled magical mormon underwear on my phone.
My boyfriend borrowed it and asked why that popped into the search box.

Dude, I'm so glad my husband doesn't use my computer. My brain works in weird ways, and I google everything He would be so confused.

I have seen the future and I'm fairly relieved to say, it looks nothing like me.

See, when a tragedy like this theater shooting happens, I wonder how religion falls into place. I mean this shit already happened, so what the fuck good does praying now do? Praying for the family? Yea, cause me talking to myself here in Queens does those people over there a whole lot of good!
Is the praying there to make me feel better? That would make more sense actually.

And even if there is a God, we're prtty much on autopilot anyway. He's an absentee dad.

As a kid I questioned how if different religions believe in different ideas of "god" how can any of them be right or wrong? Growing up in a very diverse area, I knew kids that came from all different religious backgrounds which made me start wondering why I should believe what they were telling me in the church I went to. Luckily my mom hated anything church related so when I decided I did not want to go anymore, I wasn't forced to.

You always pray after the fact of course. It's all part of god's plan. To take away people from their loved ones too soon and cause unbearable pain and sadness for them.

    Remember....

I don't get it either. Praying is for your comfort, not the person who is hurting. Just like telling a child, "You're ok!" when they fall down.
I do pray to myself. I highly doubt it works but it does bring me comfort during difficult times. There's probably not a higher being but it has made my life easier to think so at times.

If someone I know if having a tough time, I tell them that I am thinking of them.
When someone I love needs moral support, I tell them I'm sending them good vibes.
I think that someone saying they will pray for you is essentially the same sentiment. No, it doesn't change anything (logically), but it can help to know someone cares, however they choose to communicate that.

"You're in my prayers" Every time I hear this (or any of its variants) it annoys the shit out of me. It's the most useless inane statement ever.

The other one is "Everything happens for a reason", "It's all part of God's plan", etc. etc. God the giant puppetmaster up in the sky, pulling the strings on all His Children. "Let's see, Milton could use a trial in his life--I'll give him cancer. And Joe's wife and kids too, let's have a drunk driver kill him. They'll be so much stronger for it."

I just can't with that crap.

Those fit right up there with "Well, at least your dad is no longer hurting and is in Heaven now" or "God only takes the best ones first". Like...what the fuck did you just say to someone who is grieving a loss? Go fuck yourself.

Stick with "I'm sorry for your loss" and scurrying away. And food.

You might also throw in a "He was the best (teacher/boss/guitar player/etc) ever. We will all miss him."

Reminiscing about his drinking everyone under the table at Cousin Fred's viewing should be used with caution.
"It's the salt water that changes the Rainbow's pretty colors to gray." "And his colors never come back?" "No, once he's been to the sea he's changed forever. The Steelhead can come back home here, stay for the rest of his days, and live among the other Rainbow trout, but he'll always be different because of where he's been." Morsi, Pamela. Garters.

The stories that my dad's best friend told at his funeral were my favorite part. (If there was a favorite) No drinking under the table type of shit, but reminiscing of getting into trouble. And it wasn't at his viewing...the viewing is no time for stories. Not even "lighten the mood" kinda stories.
