If that's the case, someone should report them to CFS.

(CBS) Doctors say the octuplets born Monday outside Los Angeles are doing well.

But when they go home, it will be to a truly full house.

CBS News has learned the mother who gave birth to the octuplets has six other children.

An acquaintance who didn't want to be identified told Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman the mom has four older boys and two girls.

"She is young," the acquaintance says, "fairly young. She has six children already. And in those six children, she has a set of twins."

While the hospital where the octuplets were born, Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower, Calif., some 17 miles southeast of L.A., hasn't confirmed that the mom used fertility drugs, there are no documented cases of naturally conceived octuplets, Kauffman points out.

Doctors say the babies are all breathing on their own. But all weigh less than four pounds and are expected to remain in the hospital for weeks.

The woman and her children live on a cul-de-sac with her parents.

A man who came to the door of the family home confirmed to Kauffman that he's the grandfather of the octuplets, but refused to speak to her.

"From what you know about this family, and this household, do you think they'll be able to support 14 kids?" Kauffman asked the acquaintance.

"Well," she responded, "so far, they've been fine with the six they have. Fourteen I don't know."

Kauffman says the neighborhood has homes with just two or three bedrooms.

It will, Kauffman concluded, "be tight!"

There are guidelines. With invetro they have really throttled back on the number of eggs they implant.  But with fertility drugs odd of conceiving multiples are quite high, and once some one conceives multiples the only thing you can really do is do a selective abortion. Many women aren't willing to do that.

Fertility treatments are not cheap http://www.babycenter.com/0_fertility-treatment-your-options-at-a-glance_1228997.bc and are hard on you.  I can't imagine why anyone with a passel of kids would go through them.  Maybe this was "natural" pregnancy.

i have a difficult time believing this could happen w/o fertility drugs.  but what doctor would give these drugs to a woman who has six children already.  the whole thing seems utterly irresponsible.

I totally overlooked other treatments than invitro.

I agree 100% that most woman aren't willing to do selective reduction.  My issue is with technology.  There has to be a way to limit these births, perhaps in the drugs that are used?

Octuplets: Cautionary tale not triumph, say experts
Birth of octuplets is not a 'medical triumph,' caution fertility experts
By Linda Carroll
msnbc.com
updated 6:23 a.m. MT, Thurs., Jan. 29, 2009
As the world marvels over the miracle births of eight seemingly healthy babies in California, medical ethicists and fertility experts argue that the media is sending the wrong message with its focus on the creation of an instant Brady-Bunch like family.

It’s fine to celebrate the healthy delivery, said Sean Tipton, spokesperson for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. But, a pregnancy resulting in this many babies is “clearly is not a medical triumph. Eight babies is not an outcome anyone should want.”

Unbridled celebration of these multiple births ignores the risks that this type of pregnancy can bring and the huge costs to the medical system and the parents, say experts.

“I think when the press goes googoo and gaga over these multiples, they don’t seem to understand that it’s really risky for the mothers and for their fetuses,” said Arthur Caplan, chair of the department of medical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania and an msnbc.com contributor.

Fertility experts interviewed by msnbc.com all said that the most optimal situation was a pregnancy with one embryo — something that often can be accomplished through careful monitoring of the woman during her fertility treatments.

Hormone injections likely led to octuplets
All said their comments came with the caveat that no one currently knows the circumstances of how the California mom became pregnant, since neither she nor her doctor has spoken publicly.

But, the experts said, it’s highly unlikely that a woman could become pregnant with eight embryos without some kind of fertility treatment. The most likely scenario is that the woman was given hormone injections to spur the growth of follicles and then was either inseminated artificially or told when she should have intercourse with her spouse.

With this type of fertility treatment, doctors need to monitor the woman’s cycle very closely because it’s impossible to predict exactly how many follicles will grow when the ovaries are stimulated, said Dr. Mark Perloe, medical director at Georgia Reproductive Specialists in Atlanta. You can get a good idea of how many follicles are growing if you run regular blood tests and ultrasounds of the woman’s ovaries.

If it looks like the woman is developing too many follicles, then doctors have two choices, Perloe said. You can chose either to skip the cycle and try again with a lower dose of the follicle-stimulating hormones or you can harvest the eggs, freeze them, and then do in vitro fertilization later. With in vitro fertilization, the doctor has control over how many embryos are transferred to a woman’s uterus.

But, Perloe said, sometimes women ignore their doctor’s advice and go ahead with the cycle.

And that puts both the mom and her fetuses at risk.

“From the obstetrician’s point of view, you want to prevent higher order multiples,” said Dr. Zev Rosenwaks, director of the Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “As a rule, singleton pregnancies do better than twins. And twins do better than triplets.”

Problems down the road?
As the number of embryos increases, so does the risk, Rosenwaks said. And while the California woman’s babies, which were delivered at 30 weeks, may look fine now, they could end up with problems later on, he added.

“It’s hard to tell right now,” Caplan agreed. “It’s tough to get them all born without pre-maturity and disability. I don’t know of any birth that involved seven or eight fetuses that hasn’t resulted in both.”

Premature babies are at risk for lung, stroke and intestinal problems, said Dr. Elisabeth Ginsburg, medical director of the in vitro fertilization program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology.

Even if the babies survive the delivery, they may die later — as was the case with first U.S. set of live born octuplets. One died a week after they were born in Houston in 1998. And surviving children can end up with serious disabilities. Of the seven babies born in 1997 to Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey in Iowa, two ended up with cerebral palsy.

Even when you carefully monitor a woman’s ovaries you can end up with surprises, said Dr. Howard Zacur, professor and director of the division of endocrinology and infertility at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.

“What I’ve learned is that you have to be really careful,” said Zacur.

Ultimately, in vitro fertilization may be the best way to avoid multiples, experts said.

Answer may be tied to insurance
But because insurance companies often offer little or no coverage for in vitro fertilization, couples often feel they must choose fertility drugs with artificial insemination instead because this method costs less, Zacur said, adding that the Europeans may have found a reasonable solution. In Europe, insurance companies have said they would pay for in vitro fertilization if the physician agrees to transfer only one embryo per cycle.

With the big price tag for in vitro fertilization coupled with the rosy picture painted by the press of families with multiples, it’s probably not surprising that many opt for the less expensive, but more risky treatment, Caplan said.

Prospective parents see profiles of these families, Caplan said, and “they think, ‘I saw the people on TV. It looked hectic, but fun.'"

Nope, 6 kids+ grandparents + 2 bed house = no ivf. I know it comes across as harsh but damn.  Surely thats some kind of fire hazard? In it for the free house?

I feel for the couples who want a baby so bad but can't naturally, that could look after a baby or twins but can't afford treatment or insurance.

It still hasn't come out whether or not she took fertility drugs.  They do say that it is damn near impossible to have eight children at a time without them.  So, wouldn't a doctor, a good doctor refuse this procedure knowing the situation or would it be non of their business.  Would you want some sort of guidelines for such things or is that too intrusive?
I kind of think she went to Mexico for fertility treatment. I'm told the drugs are super cheap down there, and that's the only real explaination that I can think of. A normal doctor would find out her history and know that she shouldn't have anymore kids, so she went down south and paid someone to give her the meds.

That's why they take fert meds - when they are having problems conceiving. How do we know she didn't use donor eggs?
We don't.  I'm also pretty sure that a doctor wouldn't turn someone down for any fertility procedure based on her already having 6 kids.  If she can afford to pay for the treatments and there is no medical reason preventing it the most they can do is advise against it.

There's reports that they live in a two bedroom house. I doubt that she would have the money to use donor eggs.

Unless the reason they live there is because they were saving up the money to afford donor eggs.  Seems they live with her parents.  This is a feasible reason.

IDK about that one.

I mean, so they saved up for donor eggs, are they still going to live with her parents now? And they already had 6 kids; why not just be happy about that and spend all your money on those six instead of bringing eight more into the picture? There's 18 people in that house now (the first 6 kids, the new 8 kids, the grandparents, and the parents). Thats just insane!

Re: US woman gives birth to octuplets all are doing very well'

Family: Octuplets' mother has 6 other children
WHITTIER, Calif. -- The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week has six other children and never expected to have eight more when she took fertility treatment, her mother said.

Angela Suleman said her daughter expects a big challenge raising 14 children. The good news, she said, is all the babies appear healthy.

"I looked at those babies. They are so tiny and so beautiful," Suleman told The Los Angeles Times on Thursday.

Suleman's daughter gave birth to the octuplets Monday at a hospital in Bellflower but has requested that doctors keep her name confidential. Media knew little about the woman until a family acquaintance told CBS' "The Early Show" on Thursday that the mother is "fairly young" and lives with her parents and her six children, including twins.

Within hours, media had camped out at the family's home in Whittier, where the babies' grandfather pulled up in a minivan in the evening and briefly spoke to The Associated Press. Beside him were two children -- a 7-year-old and 6-year-old -- who said they were excited to have eight new siblings.

But the grandfather warned that media may have a tougher time finding the family after the babies are released from the hospital.

"We have a huge house, not here," said the man, who would only identify himself as Ed. "You are never going to know where it is."

Suleman said her daughter had embryos implanted last year, and after finding out she was pregnant with multiple babies was given the option by doctors of selectively reducing the number of embryos. The woman declined.

"What do you suggest she should have done? She refused to have them killed," Suleman told the Times. "That is a very painful thing."

Dr. Harold Henry said the woman was already pregnant when she came to Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, and she was counseled on the option of aborting some of the fetuses. Doctors had been expecting only seven babies, but an eighth was born in the cesarean delivery.

The six boys and two girls, the second octuplets born alive in the United States, have garnered worldwide attention as media have attempted to find out more about the mother and her family. Hours after media gathered outside the Whittier home, Kaiser issued a statement on behalf of the mother requesting privacy.

"Please know, in our own time, we will share additional details about this miraculous experience," the statement read. "The babies continue to grow strong everyday and make good progress. My family and I are ecstatic about all of their arrivals. Needless to say the eighth was a surprise to us all, but a blessing as well."

Dr. Mandhir Gupta said seven of the babies were breathing without assistance. One was still receiving oxygen through a tube in his nose.

Seven of the infants were being tube-fed donated breast milk. One of the boys was expected to begin feedings Friday.

All babies continued to receive an intravenous nutritional combination. They were expected to remain in the hospital for several more weeks.

Some fertility specialists have said the children face increased health risks because they are octuplets and born nine weeks premature. At birth, they ranged between 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3 pounds, 4 ounces.

Doctors say they advise against higher-order births, but acknowledge the decision is not theirs to make.

"Who am I to say that six is the limit?" said Dr. Jeffrey Steinberg, medical director of Fertility Institutes, which has clinics in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York City. "There are people who like to have big families."

Dr. James Grifo, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the NYU School of Medicine, added: "I don't think it's our job to tell them how many babies they're allowed to have. I am not a policeman for reproduction in the United States. My role is to educate patients."

I am waiting for the print of this but on the news they stated the family declared bankruptcy a year ago and that the grandfather is returning to Iraq to to contract work for money.

There was a doctor on stating how irresponsible it was to do this on a woman with six children and even for a woman over thirty two embryos at the max should have been placed.

Good lord

I still am trying to figure out why this single woman wanted more children.  I am so suspicious of this.  At a press conference a reporter asked one of the doctor why he would do this procedure on a woman with six children already at home and he said "Phizer has no guidelines on this".  What they hell.  How about a doctor using his common sense.

Here is a quote from an article

However, most practitioners - while confirming that guidance tells them not to implant multiple embryos - acknowledge the choice is not ultimately theirs to make and rests solely with the mother. "Who am I to say that six is the limit?" Dr Jeffrey Steinberg, medical director of Fertility Institutes, which has clinics in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York City, told the Associated Press news agency. "There are people who like to have big families."

Dr James Grifo, professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the New York University School of Medicine, added: "I don’t think it's our job to tell them how many babies they’re allowed to have. I am not a policeman for reproduction in the United States. My role is to educate patients."

But in the article above it said
Suleman said her daughter had embryos implanted last year, and after finding out she was pregnant with multiple babies was given the option by doctors of selectively reducing the number of embryos. The woman declined.

"What do you suggest she should have done? She refused to have them killed," Suleman told the Times. "That is a very painful thing."

How about not planting so many embryos?
