Re: PETA wants fish to be renamed "Sea Kittens"

I admit to being a raging anti PETA person.

A young man I once knew nearly died because he got all caught up in all their crap.  He decided that bacteriums were equally entitled to life and that he had no right to kill them with antibiotics.  :x

As for knowing if they are committing satire or not, well all of their ideas are so stupid that they don't really qualify as good satire.  Just look at their latest ranting about service dogs. Hard to know if they are being ironic or idiotic.
"It's the salt water that changes the Rainbow's pretty colors to gray." "And his colors never come back?" "No, once he's been to the sea he's changed forever. The Steelhead can come back home here, stay for the rest of his days, and live among the other Rainbow trout, but he'll always be different because of where he's been." Morsi, Pamela. Garters.

Re: PETA wants fish to be renamed "Sea Kittens"

I like PETA. There I said it.  :-P

However, I also know I could get super crazy and so I keep my distance.

I often wonder why we can't get more people to be equally as passionate about human rights as animal rights though.  :|

Anybody here read Sick Puppy? Or anything by Carl Hiassen? He seems to really get it. Animals, nature, all things on earth should be respected but to take it to insane levels of either side of the spectrum is just wrong.

Geez mowt   from where I'm standing it seems like you are taking satire for seriousness.

I'm one of the most outspoken anti peta people here...

I know you are vegan or vegetarian or something, but just because people disagree with your point of view, or make fun of an organization who has arguably, single-handedly  done more to set back the cause of animal rights, and most certainly asks for ridicule.....   does not make us retards.
I didn't call anyone retarded for disagreeing with me or my beliefs.  I was clearly referring to people who think this is a serious plea from PETA.  I don't care if people disagree with PETA, a lot of the time even I disagree with them, but they should do it for the right reasons (AKA because this campaign is a stupid cry for attention, not because "sea kittens" is a real idea).

The way I took it ...you pretty much called us all retards.....    when you throw out a phrase like plenty-o-tards.....to 5 or 6 people,    well  even a slow chap such as myself might take offense.

No one takes PETA seriously anymore. What makes you think you are the only person capable of seeing the sarcasm.  Re read the thread...I did, and I didn't see anyone taking them seriously, (except maybe boogie, who was afraid that someone would get offended, so he treated the subject with some tact.)

He seems like a reasonably intelligent chap to me... the rest of us were obviously being satirical and sarcastic.

I disagree with a hell of a lot of what is said here, and I'm highly opinionated, and I think some of the shit posted here is stupid.... but I don't go and call people names over it... don't get me wrong...I've gotten into it, but it has always been on a one on one level....  never made sweeping blanket statements about a whole thread of people...

Sorry....the way you presented it makes me like you meant just about all of us.

Humane society, ASPCA......  great organizations,
PETA not so much.
He used to claim he ate roadkill. And things that died of old age. And fruit.  Lots of fruit.  You're not killing the plant, see.  Maple syrup. Eggs. (He felt bad about chicken's in slavery, but...) Things like that.  And I don't claim that PETA made him crazy, but they certainly fed his sickness...  I don't know his views on wood, but I know a friend of his used to bait him by telling him about micro-organisms in oil.  "Every time you drive you're car, you are not only killing the bugs that end up splattered on your windshield, you are incinerating tiny animals..."  :2thescream:

Don't know how he's doing, or if he's even still alive... But he was a very sad case. A gentle soul.

I'm all for animal rights but Peta is completely fucktarded.  I just read an article about how they bought some huge lobster from a restaurant and set it free into the ocean. Great job, rocket scientists.  Anyone know what happens when you take a lobster who's been living a fresh water tank and reintroduce it to salt water? Yeah, it dies. That's the first thing anyone who has exotic fish or sea pets or sea kittens is instructed at an aquatic pet store.

One of the many reasons PETA pisses me off is the fact that they belittle and stomp on the rights of many groups to make a case for the rights another group.

I agree with the core of PETA's values.  I really do.  It is just too bad these people are way to crazy to garner my full support.

I mean lets face it, we as humans, need to use and eat animals to survive.  I just have a feeling that PETA wants everyone to be Vegan and what not...

How do you know it was in a fresh water tank? I thought lobster were like crocs and can actually move in and out of slat water. I dunno. I just find it hard to believe that PETA would go through any type of work to save a lobster just to in the end be lazy and not research how to keep it alive. Ya know?

I did a little browsing...

Bowie...please show a link to verify this...all I found after looking through six different sites on lobsters was the PH level in their tank had to be a certain level, nothing at all about them dying from going from fresh to salt water.  (in fact I have not seen anyone mention you keep a pet lobster in fresh water to start with, but I will keep looking).

I can't even find the article I'm looking for because EVERYTHING that says lobster is related to the stupid PETA story.  I remember Drew Barrymore doing this a few years ago and a bunch of animal rights groups were like great job, those lobsters aren't even from these parts and will most likely die regardless.

I like, despise PETA. Also the ALF. They have the right message and go about in such a wrong and alienating way that they do far more to damage their cause than aid it.

yeah I agree with you.  I despise extremism in all regards generally.

I wish you would not have mentioned the lobster thing though...I want to know the answer, but I have found nothing on 10 different sites that mentioned not transferring them from fresh to salt water, or vice versa.

transferring from salt water to fresh water...

To read the description, this may well be the cruelest method of killing lobsters. Lobsters who are transferred from sea water to fresh water (unsalted tap water) flip wildly, assume unnatural postures, regurgitate food, and suffer from a painful swelling at their joints. According to J.R. Baker, "the lobster has no defence against the entry of fresh water through the gills. The hard external skeleton prevents any swelling of the body as a whole, and as a result the soft integument at the joints becomes distended outwards. ... It is almost as though one sought to anaesthetize a human being, encased in tight armour, by slow injection of fresh water into the blood stream."
also, it seems that *fresh water lobsters* are actually crayfish.

Okay...First off...that is a biased site.  I am looking for a scientific research site.  That page is the equivalent of going to someone's myspace and taking the person's word that they are  "a really cool person" as being gospel.

But...the article implies that the lobsters are kept in salt water all the time, as fresh water would kill them.  So why would a store or restaurant do something to kill their product prematurely.

So from what I have read, this story is false because the lobsters would not be kept in freshwater after being caught to begin with.

here.  this tells you how to keep a lobster before cooking it.  not biased.

Q. What do I do with my lobster order once it's delivered?
      Top of page
A. Check your lobsters as soon as they arrive. Sometimes a lobster will appear to be limp and lifeless as it may tire out during transit. Weak lobsters have droopy claws and tails and show little reaction or response when handled. These lobsters should be cooked right away. If the lobster appears to be dead please call us immediately. The best way to keep your lobsters until you are ready to begin cooking is to place them in the refrigerator to keep them cool. Cover them with damp newspaper, keeping the gills moist, allowing them to breathe. Please do not place them in fresh water. Fresh water will kill lobsters. If you have any questions on receipt of your order, please call toll-free 1-800....

Fresh water is lethal to a lobster. The animal has salty blood and tissue, which require a seawater environment if life is to be maintained.

The lobster had only been living in the tank for 10 days.  I don't know if that makes a difference as far as transition survivability or not.

Chompin, you have a tactful way with words that always makes you sound like an asshole.

As far as lobster ocean to tank back to ocean, I've always been told when owning fish that it is a really not good viable plan. I dunno, call an exotic fish place. And considering lobsters aren't like, kicking it old school on Coney Island beach, I strongly suspect that dumping the lobster back into some random spot in the ocean is the same as killing it.

Regardless, calling fish 'sea kittens' is retarded.
