The Seven Deadly Sins

Okay, so I am a History Channel lover and they have been running a series on the Seven Deadly Sins.

So what do you think is the worst of the seven for a society to have a lot of?
What about for an individual, which are the most crippling?

Personally, I think sloth is the worst that a society can have. It is unproductive, and I feel that a good society needs to be a productive one. As far as individuals go, I think envy is crippling and leads to many non-chemical psychological disorders. Constantly comparing yourself to others and desiring their lives is so nonproductive... So what do you think?

If you don't understand all the definitions, here is the Wikipedia article on it!

    Re: The Seven Deadly Sins

I am a lazy-ass with no ambitions and a deadly addiction to bad puns and ho-ho's. So sloth and gluttony are my two bad sins.

I watched those yesterday and it got me interested, so I read the low-down on Dante's Inferno and found it interesting. Midevil religion is delightfully evil and I am glad that we no longer think that.

Dammit, it's idiots like Jack Chick who give Christians a bad name. I am going to go read some Proverbs and pray that ignorance won't be the death of my religion.

    Envy would be mine.
but I am attracted to guys that have too much pride and that's what I usually hate about them in the end.

I picked sloth and envy for myself.

I agree with you Chompin that sloth is the worst in my eyes for society as a whole.

    Envy and wrath, for myself.

I agree that sloth is unproductive, but I think greed runs a close second.

Just realize that no one has a perfect life and that your definition of what you need is probably not what will make you happy. You have something someone else wants as well, so instead of beating yourself up about what you dont have, work harder to get it. Or just become a sloth.

I suppose I'm guilty of several of them, but mostly wrath. That's also the one I wish I could "cure" myself of. I can feel the amount of stress it puts on my body and my mind by walking around angry all the time. :|

    Re: The Seven Deadly Sins

greed is the worst of them, with the rest following as manifestations thereof. If I may elaborate :

    1) Greed comes as a desire to "have more"-- those who have more come into contrast with those who have less, i.e. the "haves" and "haves not". The result of this is envy.

    2) Those who have also have pride, and those who don't are envious. That envy is a reaction to the others' pride.

    2) Envy is a pseudonym for poverty, crime comes as a reaction to poverty, and crime can also be seen as wrath, or if a crime is committed by a disgruntled person, revenge. This also applies to lust, as lust is a result of the desire (envy) for someone's affections or physical delights. When wrath and lust are mixed (both a result of envy, which is a result of greed) we get some of the most horrifying scenarios, often associated with revenge.

    3) Greed is also, of course, greediness. When faced with the temptation to indulge in our hedonist inclinations, we often succumb to the "why the hell not?" route. Why not have a third helping? It's there. It needs to be eaten. This is gluttony.

    4) Gluttony, unfortunately, has a negative effect on our bodies. Not only does it cause lazy (sloth), fat people, but it also goes as far as impairing people physically, ridding society of productive members, causing a sort of sloth, I guess. I think I can pull this last one off.

So that's why I think greed is the worstest sin of them all.

    Re: The Seven Deadly Sins

Mine is most definitely envy, with wrath being the very least. I'd say greed and gluttony are pretty high up there with envy though.

Wait. Are we supposed to say what we think are the worst for society or what we're most guilty of?? Greed (well, past greed) is doing a pretty good job on society right now, right? As for me, hmm. Why is lust so bad? Who are you hurting there?

Seriously, I've been crippled by sloth. I'm not doing anything I want to do with my life, and I have no excuses as to why. I'm just lazy. And because I'm not doing anything I want to do, I'm envious of everybody else who IS doing what they want to do. It's a vicious cycle.

Since the Seven Deadly Sins is a Biblical concept, lust is viewed as being sexually immoral/sinful against both one's self, and whoever you are lusting after. So, while you may not be physically hurting yourself (hypothetically speaking, I don't actually mean you) or someone else with lust, emotionally/mentally you are "corrupting" yourself and the person in question. Does that make any sense whatsoever? :?

ETA: I personally chose "gluttony" and "envy," although "sloth" was a close runner-up.

Well the poll is for you personally...the commentary I figured could include both what is worse for the individual and worse for society collectively.

Why is lust so bad? I suppose when you are married and have an affair, or are having an affair with someone who is married, that hurts a lot of people. Homewrecking anyone?

Yes but if one is causing the other, the cycle can be broken easily...well not easily, it will take work, but take this as a sign to break the habit!!
