I looked and looked for the meme this morning and can't find it. I saw it 20 times last week. Next time I see it posted I will grab it and post it here.

Any rescue worth their salt would never adopt to her if they know any of what she is demanding. Yes, rescues want to get animals adopted but they want them to go to good homes...and then don't want them being dumped again or mistreated. If she does push through with trying to get a dog, maybe you can go with her and let all of her demands slip and they will realize she's not a good home for a dog.

They actually have Vets on duty in the airport to examine the dogs and paperwork before clearing them. Fun stuff lol.
OK, good. I've shipped five cats to mainland Europe (and back), but never to the UK or the RoI. I've dealt with the airport vets and massive paperwork, but I thought it was a little stricter in the UK. Glad your babies won't have to sit in quarantine.

I've looked all over for it too. We might not need it though, she informed me in a text message today that she has decided a dog is too much responsibility. I've been telling her horror stories.

I suspected this, but I had a bad experience w/a cat rescue whose priority was homing a cat and nothing else. TBH, my Friend's reaction to my concerns was so flippant and incredulous, I thought maybe I WAS being overly sensitive. That's why I posted the question here. My thanks to everyone who responded.

Well, Ireland isn't the UK so you'll have to look in to their own laws on it. I believe most places have a system in place where you don't have to quarantine them if you follow their requirements though.

Wait, are you going to Northern Ireland, or the Republic of? I thought you were moving to NI?

Its so sad that people mistreat cats and dont screen them for good homes. Im a big cat person and this hurts my heart.

Oh no, I didn't confuse them, I live 60 miles from Belfast, my SIL is RoI. I thought you were heading to Northern Ireland based on some stuff you said in previous threads.

If it weren't for my transient lifestyle, I would be the neighborhood Cat Lady. I watch cat videos on YouTube. I absolutely love cats, they are my spirit animal and it is my mission in life to pet every single one I see.

    Nope. Headed to East Clare.

I know you didn't confuse them, but it reminded me of an incident that was super cringe and hilarious at the same time. I'm sure that you're aware that calling Ireland "The UK" is a HUGE HUGE HUGE 'No no'. So I was in a band that covered all 80s music from the UK. The lead singer was British and we were all in a green room at a Casino we were playing along with my Husband. Anyway, the venue was playing some really obscure 80s UK stuff and the lead singer lit up at one song that none of us recognized so he turned to my Husband and he said, "You're from the UK. You remember this one, right?!"

Now, my husband may be quiet and he may pick his battles, but you NEVER EVER EVER EVER say anything like that to him. Some of his family was perhaps, maybe, could have been part of "The Troubles" and you just don't go there. (Wink wink, say no more).

So we all just stared at the lead singer. Me, the Scottish drummer and my Husband not knowing what to day with a blank expression. Lead singer says, "What? Did I say something wrong? Ireland. UK. Same thing, right?" Then looks to the Scottish drummer who just says.... "Don't look at me. I'm his brother in arms" lol.

I explained that it wasn't and he looked confused. We just dropped it and Hubby left to go out in the crowd.

The husband is convinced that he knew better and was being a dick. I mean, HE WAS FROM ENGLAND. But out of respect for me didn't say anything. Talk about awkward.

A decade later, he's still Facebook friends with him and I'm not

Aha! That's why I thought you were moving to NI, you referenced "The Troubles" before so I got it in my head you were moving to the Belfast area. As for your British singer, maybe he thought your husband was from Northern Ireland and (being British himself) didn't think it would be offensive? My SIL was from Co. Clare, but I never saw him get upset about being mistaken for a Brit - and it happened all the time because people are clueless. He would roll his eyes and bemoan the obvious lack of geo-political awareness, but I never saw him get angry about it.

I think a lot of people (especially foreigners) don't understand the difference between "The Irelands" in much the same way a Brit might not understand that WashDC isn't a state. I might be wrong, but I don't think I learned it in school. I feel like I didn't even become aware of the situation in Northern Ireland until I was around 12yo and an Irish Catholic family from Belfast moved in next door. I babysat their children and that's when I became aware there were two Irelands, and this couple and their young family were sponsored by the Church because they were fleeing a bad situation.

Well, you're certainly moving to a lovely part of the country. Lucky you! A few years ago, we did a three-week Harley ride around Ireland/Northern Ireland and it was one of my favorite road trips ever. Everything was perfect - the weather, the people, the food, the sites! It's just an amazing country. I wish you lots of luck, you're gonna love it!

I adopted an 8yo retriever/chow mix that's VERY friendly but also needy. He came from a home where there was always someone home. I can't go to the bathroom with the door shut because he endlessly barks when I am out of view. Needless to say, I now have an audience when I poop. He also sheds like mad. I've vacuumed the couch 2 times and it's difficult to tell where the dog ends and the couch begins.

Good on you for adopting an older dog. Sorry about the seperation anxiety, but it seems like you are okay with it.

My mom has always had a dog that was part chow, and I would brush them a lot and shave them when I could. Have you tried those couch covers?

You saved a life! That's amazing!
Rescues do take time and patience, by it's SO worth it. Separation Anxiety could become an issue. There are things you can do to help with that. CBD oil helps with calming that anxiety down and if you need to leave the house, get some kongs and fill them with dog safe peanut butter and freeze them. You give him one of those and it will keep him occupied while you're not there. It'll save your furniture too. Be sure that there is NO WAY he could get out while you're away because he will try. The barking concerns me. Do you have close neighbors? If so, you don't want them reporting it if he just keeps barking constantly while you're gone. The kong might help with that as well as keeping a radio on to a talk station. You might want to try to ease him in to being alone.

Maybe set up a camera and leave him for an hour and see what he does. Crates are always good too. You don't have to lock him in, but having a "den" available to him that he can feel safer in is a plus.

Good luck and thank you for being an awesome person!

My neighbors are far enough away that it won't be a problem. He has a kong but he doesn't show any interest in it. He loves chewing up stuffed animals so I've gotten him a few that are made just for that. I leave Animal Planet on for him. There's a Dog TV station that's $4.99 a month and supposed to be pretty good for entertaining them. I just haven't gotten that far yet. I'm not a fan of crates. I've seen too many neurotic dogs who have been crated and since he's never been in one he might not adapt well. He has a bed that he likes and seems to be a "safe zone" for him.

He lived on a college campus for 4 years and was the school's party dog at one point so he's very social. Lord knows what substances he was fed while he was in college. It's funny, my dog has more college influence than my kids...

If I could figure out how to post a picture on here I would. Just picture a giant fluffy golden retriever...
