Thanks. My husband and I think he had a second stroke a few days before he died. I found Rene, unresponsive, bleeding heavily from his mouth. He was gone two minutes later.

When my late Sebastien had an abscess on his right cheek, the vet gave me a syringe and antibiotics. It was hell trying to administer the meds to him. Nor is it fun giving rats a bath. Such squirminess with their daggers of doom claws. Their tails are the best.

I posted a picture a few months ago of my lab with drains in her due to an infection.

Well low and behold the poor doggy's side swelled up over the weekend and she was whinning and moping around.

I called the vet on sat said it was an emergency and no one called back.
Called today, got her in and the Dr kept her.
He thought she had something in her but he cut her open couldn't find it and told me if it happens again get her in.
(which I did today )
He operated on her today, FINALLY found what he was looking for, but he had to do drastic surgery which means he cut the poor dog opened and dug around until he found what was giving her this infection.
He stretched her skin so much she has to be seen by him on Wed morning and she isn't even home yet and won't be home till sometime Tues.

Well he told me what he found in her and even saved it so I can see it tomorrow when I get her.
It is what is used to hold fancy sammy's together, not a toothpick since it is bigger and longer then one but it is pointy on both ends.
He thinks she either swallowed it and it got through her stomach, intestines, fat, etc, etc till it was loged in her side or she was impaled with it and went straight through her skin and landed somewhere in her side he just isn't sure how the hell it got in there.

So I have to get her tomorrow, she has 4 drains once again, and he is going to wrap her up like a mummy to put pressure on her skin so it gets back together or some shit like that.

Poor puppy, I know she is going to be in pain and whine all night and I can't be there with her
But when she comes home tomorrow I will be posting pictures so you can all see what hell she has gone through ONCE AGAIN....
Okay, here are the pictures I finally loaded of her and her stick that was stuck inside her.
These are 2 weeks after surgery

yeah, i had a old Alaskan malamute, and she would tear tennis balls apart. and my mom finally stopped buying them because she would destroy them. she became sick and low and behold she ate 3 tennis balls and had to have them removed.

Okay you guys I lost a friend today...
Sure he was in essence "just a cat" but to me he was so much more.

He walked me everywhere! If we walked to the park he would escort us, and look both ways before he crossed the street. He learned how to roll over, (yeah I taught him that) and was absolutely the best hunter ever. NO-ONE in my neighborhood had mice. He was Awesome so this is to my friend Mr Pants. ( odd name yes but he was who he was)
His name came from my ex Rob. Rob called me 3 1/2 years ago and said "I have the cat for you Beth." He told me his name was "poopy pants" and i said well that will be the first thing to change, hahaha little did I know that he answered to that name and when I tried to name him "Nimh" and "nicodemus" both from the Secret of Nimh, he resisted. I then began calling him Mr. Pants. I saw him the last time on Wednesday. He looked bad and was weak. I tried to keep him home until morning when I would take him to the vet. I gave him food and fresh water, he laid his head on the dish but wouldnt eat.
He knew he was dying, and he came to say goodbye. He suffered, I can tell. I think it was either the new dangerously deadly strain of "tick fever" (PLEASE WATCH YOUR PETS CAREFULLY) or he was poisoned by antifreeze. I looked out at about 3am and he had left. I never saw him again. I dont know how he was able to leave at all he barely made it home. I am SO sad you guys. I dont sugar coat things with my girls and I told them that he had likely passed. They took it hard but not as hard as I did. I loved him. He NEVER took off for more than an afternoon. He was fixed and he didnt like to fight. He stayed home, always. That is how I know he is gone. I know this message goes in all different directions and barely makes sense but I am absolutely lost without my kitty-boy. I have to wrap this ramble up as I cant stop crying. Thanks for reading about him, my friend. My Mr. Pants.

i'm sorry and don't think that it was "just a cat" to some people those are their babies and in essence, you spending 10-maybe 20 years with that friend. We always recommend that if you are certain your cat is very sick or dying and cannot come in to the hospital ( we are 24 hours) that you put them in a crate or find someway to confine them because when they know they are dying they will crawl away. It's in their instinct that they need to hide in case of predators coming along. Are you for sure he is gone?

Thanks for the kind words you guys! I appreciate it! He sure was cute huh?

I have 3 more cats that stay inside. He was my guard kitty.
He was the smartest kitty I have had since my Pandora. (I had her for 15 years and she died in 2003)
He refused to come into the house. His mom was tame and his daddy was wild, and he while tame insisted on being outside. He was awesome! I think of the good times alot and it makes me cry. I have to wait a bit and then the memories wont sting so much. My girls, and husband are devistated as well. We all feel his passing. It sucks so much. He was due next week for his top spot, and vet check-up. He was 3 1/2 years old and healthy.

I still have:
Kiko - Chocolate point Siamese
Peppers - Black Maine Coon
Orangin- Orange ragdoll tabby

Oh Beth, I am so sorry for your loss. There is nothing to be ashamed of for loving him the way you did. He never was and never will be "just a cat." He was your friend and companion and you loved him. There are few things quite as special as being loved by a pet. Mr. Pants was gorgeous and it sounds like he was an amazing cat. I know it's so hard to lose a pet because they really do become less of a pet and more of a best friend, but just know that he is no longer feeling pain and that he loved you until the end. He made the point to see you one last time, it sounds like he knew he could always count on you for a friendly gesture.

This link talks about the loss of a pet. I rarely cry, but I lost it the first time I read it. It's very moving and I hope you can find even a small bit of comfort in these words. http://www.vonneuroth.com/rottnursery.html

Does anyone here have experience with dwarf hamsters? I currently have 3 Robo Hamsters and I'm having issues with them. I've had 3 dwarf hamsters before, so it's not like I don't have experience with them, but I really don't know what to do right about now because I've never had hamsters in the same cage.

I bought 3 hamsters at the same time, brothers, Harpo, Zeppo and Groucho. At first they got along great. Then Harpo started to bully the other two. He beat up Groucho and made him bleed. I broke up the fight but it was sad because Groucho was bleeding and crying and he has a little scar now. I separated Harpo from the other two for a day and he behaved better when I put him back in the cage. Now, about a month later, he's turning into a bully again. I've had to break up about 5 fights in the last 2 days. I'm about ready to separate him from the other 2 permanently, but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone who has/had multiple hamsters has advice for me on how to make them all get along. HALP!
I know this is so late and not hamsters, but we had three guinea pigs and eventually separated one from the rest. They all got along fine for years until one kept trying to hump the other two and then fights would break out. We kept their cages next to each other so they could see and hear each other but we never kept them in the same cage again. Too much stress on them.

And Beth, I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a pet.

I have 2 guinea pigs! The older one, Scout, is kind of a bitch and used to pick on the younger one, Sweeney, until Sweeney finally had enough and bit a hole in Scout's ear. Now, they never fight anymore and they're inseperable. Sweeney always loved Scout, it just took Scout a while to warm up to Sweeney.

I had to separate my hamsters for good though. Groucho got beat up pretty badly again. But I'm doing the same thing you did, they're in cages right next to each other.

Beth, that was insensitive of your dad, but hopefully he didn't really mean it. Some people just don't view the loss of a pet the same way as us pet lovers do. You know we're here for you though!

Bobcat Fever Is Deadly For Cats
This Tick-Borne Illness Is Fatal To Domestic Cats
© Darlene Norris

Jun 19, 2008

Bobcat fever is fatal to cats. Most cat owners have never heard of it, but if you live in the southeastern or south central United States, you need to know about it.

Bobcat fever, also known as cytauxzoonosis, is a fatal disease that afflicts domestic cats. Most cat owners, and even many vets, are not familiar with this disease, but if you live in the southeastern or south central United States, you need to be aware of it.

What Is Bobcat Fever?

The name "bobcat fever" comes from the fact that the North American bobcat is the host for Cytauxzoon felis, the protozoa that causes it. Cytauxzoon felis usually stays dormant in bobcats, and doesn't cause any health problems for them. However, it's almost uniformly fatal for domestic cats unfortunate enough to be infected with it.

Cytauxzoonosis was first reported in Missouri and eastern Oklahoma about 1973. Since then, it has spread to Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, southern Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

How is Cytauxzoonosis Spread?

This disease is spread by ticks, specifically the American dog tick. A tick bites a bobcat and becomes infected with the cytauxzoonosis protozoa. This tick then goes on to lay eggs, and its offspring are also infected with the protozoa. Once they hatch out, they crawl up on grass or bushes and wait for a warm-blooded animal like a dog, a deer, a cat, or even a person to walk past. If it bites a cat, it injects the protozoa into the cat's system, which causes the disease.

Fortunately for humans, bobcat fever doesn't affect people, or dogs or birds or other animals. It only affects cats.

What Are The Symptoms Of Bobcat Fever?

At first your cat will become depressed and withdrawn. She won't eat or move around much. Your cat will run a high fever, up to 108 degrees farenheit, and may even radiate heat when you touch her. She'll be in extreme pain and will cry loudly.

Cytauxzoonosis has two phases, the tissue phase, and the terminal phase. In the tissue phase, the protozoa reproduces inside the cat's blood vessels, which blocks blood flow to organs in the body. The organs shut down, and the cat dies. In the terminal phase, the cat's red blood cells rupture, which release the protozoa throughout her bloodstream. A blood-smear sample shows the parasites on the blood cells, which is how this disease is diagnosed.

Is There Any Treatment For Bobcat Fever?
Veterinary science doesn't have a treatment for bobcat fever right now. This is an agonizing disease, and most cats with it are euthanized to spare them a terrible death.

Right now the best treatment is prevention. It's imperative to keep ticks off your cat. The best way to do this is to keep your cat indoors, if possible. However, there have been reports of indoor cats developing this disease. Apparently ticks come into the house on people or their clothing, or on dogs. Be sure to check yourself and your dog very carefully for ticks if you've been outside, before you come inside.

Be aware that tick preventatives and treatments for cats don't prevent all tick bites. Products that contain fipronil are most effective, but you still must check your cat carefully. Ticks like to attach themselves in between your cat's toes, on her gums, on her ears, and around her anal area, so keep an eye on these problem spots.

Protect Your Cat From Cytauxzoonosis

Many cat owners don't know anything about bobcat fever until their cat dies from it. Be informed, and take steps to protect your feline friend now.
