Orbit update??


Flooba that doggy is adorable - do you go to the rescue to walk their doggies as a volunteer?

Orbit has had a couple of quiet days. He wobbles out to the yard, tries to lift his leg a few times, maybe falls over, gives up and squats to pee. He slept all day Friday, was a little more alert yesterday, and seems to be a bit brighter yet today. You can tell his world is still cockeyed, and the other dogs bump into him and knock him over if they get close so we are keeping them separated... he is picking at his dinner, but scarfs up special treats we give him... so he seems to be about on track... The ER vet thought he would be doing a lot better in 5-10 days if it's the old dog vestiwhatsis (vertigo to you and I) If not then they will start searching for other causes.

If the poor boy could just remember not to shake his head! He shakes his head and you can tell the world goes all fun house on him and he falls down.

separation anxiety? Have you ever used a kennel? What was the medicine? Is she better now?
You will need to confine her until it's figured out.

Thank you for the tip. I didn't have a kennel but I improvised a fence so she couldn't get out of the kitchen while I was gone. After a week or so I gave it another try in the living room and she did fine. She'll still eat food if she can get to it, something she never did before, but I just make sure I haven't got any food laying around where she can get to it.

Puzz have you seen that thundershirt thing advertised for dogs? My dogs don't have that kind of anxiety, but that thing seems ridiculous to me.

There are people that I respect who swear by them. I've never used one tho. One theory that a friend explained is that for many dogs that are anxious about thunder is that the fear is caused at least in part by static electricity. Think of it. Everytime there is thunder you start getting shocked everytime you move! The thundershirt seems to cut down on the static charge the dog gets... (a dryer sheet rubbed all over the dog when a storm is brewing will do the same thing) Now for dogs that are scared of the noise and flash of lightning the thundershirt doesn't do a thing. Orbit was always nervous of storms, but now that his hearing is so poor, we don't have much of an issue anymore.

We have had 3 thunderstorms here in 10 years but Mindy is TERRIFIED of fireworks. NYE and July 4th are terrible for her. I just put her blankie in our walk-in closet and leave the door cracked so she can peek at me. The one thunderstorm we've had since I have had her spooked her but it was just 2 booms and we were done.

Joey Cat is kinda spooked by fireworks. Fred and Hope Cat could care less.

I want a hedgehog. They are adorable. The dogs are beautiful too, but way too much hair to deal with for me. The cats...well they're cats.

Jack ate chocolate kisses yesterday while I was gone. I didn't know it until he threw up some brownish stuff and foil wrappers today. It's been over 24 hours for sure and he seems fine. No symptoms except throwing up twice so I'm going to assume he's okay. The whole package was only 7 ounces and it wasn't full and there were a few left, so he couldn't have eaten too many. They were milk chocolate, which is less dangerous than dark chocolate. Goofy mutt.

Not sure if this is true but someone told me it's actual cocoa that is bad for dogs. So the more expensive, the higher cocoa ratio it has, the worse it is. You should be okay if it was a cheaper commercial chocolate. Maybe anyway.

When I was researching it I found that the darker the chocolate the worse it is, and yeah, you're right, the more expensive it is the worse it probably is.

This info seemed pretty good:

The level of theobromine and caffeine in chocolate varies between the type of chocolate, the brand and the fact that the natural occurrence of these substances in cocoa beans is variable.
Broadly:

• White chocolate - 1.1 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce of chocolate;
• Milk chocolate - 64 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce of chocolate;
• Dark sweet chocolate - 150 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce of chocolate;
• Instant cocoa powder - 151 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce of chocolate;
• Unsweetened baking chocolate - 440 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce of chocolate; and
• Dry coca powder - 808 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce of chocolate.

So how much chocolate can my dog eat?
White chocolate does not contain very much theobromine and caffeine, and your dog would need to eat a very large quantity before he would be at risk from theobromine poisoning.
If we look at a 10lb (4.5kg) dog such as a Yorkshire Terrier and a 70lb (32kg) dog like a Labrador Retriever, the following amounts of chocolate would be considered lethal doses (if we take 100mg/kg as the lethal dose):
For the Yorkshire Terrier - approximately 7oz of milk chocolate or 3oz of instant cocoa powder, or 1oz of unsweetened baking chocolate or just over half an ounce of dry cocoa powder.
For the Labrador Retriever - approximately 3lbs of milk chocolate or 1.3lbs of instant cocoa powder or 7oz unsweetened baking chocolate or 4oz of cocoa powder.
These are approximate amounts only, but do show how lethal dark chocolate is compared to milk chocolate, and how small dogs are more at risk than large dogs.

The day after Halloween, my dog ate some Milk Duds that were dropped under the dining room table. I was freaking out because he's still just a little guy, so I checked into it and it turns out there is basically ZERO actual chocolate in those things. So basically he just mowed down on some dyed corn syrup.
I actually came in here to show you guys what a doofus my dog is. He was romping around outside last weekend and found a stick. A STICK, hell yeah! So he goes crazy, pouncing all over it and tossing it around. All of a sudden, he just starts freaking out, crying and whining and pawing at his face.... He stabbed himself in the eye with the stick and nearly tore his cornea off. Here he is, a few stitches in the eyeball (and hundreds of dollars) later:

yeah, chocolate and dogs is kind of an oversold threat. A friend freaked because her lab got a chocolate chip cookie. not really a problem. Just keep the bakers choc. out of reach and don't share your chocolate, wouldn't want them to develop a taste for it...

But what is really dangerous is stuff with zylitol. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/xylitol.asp as little as two pieces of gum can kill a small dog. And the damn stuff is showing up in more and more gums, candies, mints, etc. http://xylitol.org/xylitol-products/all/all/0/ watch what you put in your purse or leave laying on your coffee table folks.
