I know, right?? Kara's really pretty.

Thanks! :-) But I pale in comparison to Shelby's gorgeous face.

Oh, and something I remembered after I logged off last night ... when I grabbed Simmie from the skater boys and took off running, one of them actually called me a cow. I weighed like 98 lbs at the time! What a douche. Plus I lost my "street cred."

I'm not that familiar with craiglist. I guess I could check. I'm just so afraid he'll go to someone who will be abusive or sell him to a lab where they will use him for experiments. (Does that really happen or is that my overactive imagination?) Every morning I say that tonight he goes to the shelter. This morning was no different. We'll see what night brings.

If taking care of dogs wasn't so darned expensive I could keep him but he's not been neutered and since we don't know anything about him he'll need shots. I think I'll call the vet today and see how much it would cost.

I just keep thinking if I take him to the shelter he might get a nice home with a fenced yard or in the country where he can run more. Then I start thinking he might not get a home at all and they'll put him down. I suck at making decisions. I was counting on husband yelling his head off about him being here and forcing me to get rid of him, but he kinda likes him, dammit. lol

Do you have a "no kill" shelter around? I don't know how prevalent they are, but they only euthanise(sp?) violent or dying dogs. Basically, they will neuter, train, and keep all dogs until they are found homes. I'm not exactly sure how you would go about finding one, but if you can, it might make your drop-off easier knowing that they won't give up on him! I believe the SPCA is all no kill shelters, though I could be wrong. Good luck!

I love his face!! He looks so sweet. I can imagine it must be a hard decision to make about whether or not to take him to the shelter. I wonder if the shelters have a way of contacting you if they are going to put him to sleep? Like, maybe you could take him there and say you found him, but you want to give him a chance at finding a good home first. Then at least you'll have given it a try. But, if for some reason no one else wanted him, maybe they could call you and give you a second chance at keeping him after all!

It seems to me that they wouldn't have a problem doing that.

I called the only local no-kill shelter that I know of. She said they have 30 or 40 dogs now. I wanted to say umm..isn't that what you do? Anyway, they won't take him. Then I spoke with the Animal Protection League which is an all volunteer organization. She said Jack Russells are hard to place because they're cranky. He would stay here with me and if they get a call from someone who might be a good match for him they will call me. It's up to me then to decide if they would be good dog owners or not. They don't charge for adoption.

I know the humane society shelter will take him but they are a kill shelter and do no screening. They do charge an adoption fee, though, so it's not like any weirdo can walk in off the street and pick a dog to take out and torture. At least they have to pay before they can torture. I can take him there and I think they will let me know before they kill him but I'd have to pay the adoption fee. Part of that goes for the neuter but I'd have to pay the rest of the neuter and still have to pay for his shots so I would lose money on the deal.

I'm wishing I had let him run instead of taking him in.

I totally understand. Two of my cats I adopted as adults and they both had major health issues. The black and white one would seriously go to the bathroom every time she moved, and it was liquidy #2. We had no idea what was going on. This was when I was in college too so I had next to no money to figure it out. We were about 1 day away from bringing her back to the shelter when this enzyme powder the vet had suggested as a last resort finally kicked in (she apparently has scar tissue in her stomach and cannot digest properly). We dealt with shitty cat for 2 months. I am guessing most people would have brought her back or killed her by then. Our gray cat had a skin problem and lost about 40% of her fur within the first week we had her. Then she'd itch/fight with the others and just have nasty scratches everywhere. The medicine the vet gave us for her worked sooo slowly so we had been considering taking her back as well. They are the sweetest cats ever and I am really glad now I somehow found the patience to deal with them.

But I've been where you are and I can empathize. It is so hard to put money, time and patience into something that may not have any return. I just believe in karma and doing a good deed will come back to ya. I think you are already doing a good thing for that dog by not letting the kill shelter do away with it.

This may be a longshot, but if you can keep him a little longer, maybe post his pictures at local vet offices with your number? I've heard of at least a few dogs being adopted this way, and at my vet, there is a bulletin board full of cats and dogs, even ferrets and stuff, looking for homes. It might take a while, but who knows, maybe you'd get a call right away.

I'm not a very trusting soul. If I gave a dog to a stranger for free I would worry about the dog forever. At the shelter at least a person has to pay and that makes me think they would be less likely to be taking them just to torture them or something.

Anyway, I'm not a good person. I took him to the shelter. I talked to every frickin' body in the area who has anything to do with helping with situations such as this and nobody really gives a damn. I think there are just so many abandoned and unloved pets that everyone is overwhelmed.

Daughter and I took him in. They said small dogs are very adoptable so he should find a home. We cried all the way home. If I see another stray anything I am walking the other way. And if I ever find out who dumped this dog I will be in jail because I will not be able to stop myself from slapping them at least once and probably more.

If he happens to miraculously find his way back here, though, we'll have to keep him. I don't think that will happen though. I mean, he didn't find his way back to his first home, right? Just my luck to find a dog with no sense of direction.

It's only 675 miles and Jack Russells are supposed to be really smart. Maybe if I gave him a map.

Aw, well you really tried to find him a good home and that is what counts. You could call the shelter a few times to see if he gets/got adopted. I'm sure he will, he's too cute. But it would be nice to know for peace of mind. If he doesn't, maybe they would let you take him back?

Oh and just and FYI though since you said you weren't familiar with craigslist, what you do to find out if you have one in your area or not is go to google, type in your city, state and "pets", and the nearest craigslist link should pop up. You can ask for an adoption fee on there to make sure that he would only go to someone who really wanted him. That way, if this situation ever happens again, you'd feel better about fostering a stray. Don't beat yourself up about it, you did a good thing. :-)
Try to realize it's all within yourself. No one else can make you change. And to see you're really only very small. And life flows on within you and without you.

--George Harrison--

I am going to follow up on him to make sure he's adopted and not killed, although I don't trust them to know what's going on there much. I used to take their pictures and keep up their petfinder site and in general they are pretty scattered. Someone yesterday told me they have a new director who is actually there every day and trying to improve and change things though, so maybe it's getting better.

I did check craiglist and there isn't anything local to me. I'm in the middle of nowhere. I need to get some craiglist shit started for my area, huh? I need more entertainment.

As I was typing this I saw out of the corner of my eye something black and white in my yard. I thought for a second it was the dog, but it was just one of the neighborhood cats, relieving himself in my grandson's sandbox. :-(

Haha yeaaaah that's what we always said. Yet there's now 9 at my house. =)

I do a lot of rescue work though, so the majority of them are products of that.

That is actually my dream, running a cat shelter. I too have a hard time turning cats away. But we have a little house now. No room at the inn!

    The rest of the story

I called the shelter this morning. My doggie was doing terrible. They had to keep him in a room by himself because he was so distressed and scared. He wasn't eating and he had bitten one of the shelter workers, so I went and got him. He wasn't looking very adoptable and I didn't want to take a chance they'd put him down without calling me first.

    He's happy to be home.
