Krista Lueth - missing since 11 Nov 08

    http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID =69627212

A 34-year-old student has been missing for nine days, Michigan State Police reported.

Krista R. Lueth, who is pursuing her second MSU bachelor’s degree in horticulture, was last seen Nov. 11 at her Eureka Street home in Lansing. Lueth’s father reported her missing to State Police around noon Saturday.

Police are still investigating the incident and would not comment if the circumstances surrounding Lueth’s disappearance are suspicious.

“The case is still a missing person until we’ve conducted interviews with family and friends,” said State Police Sgt. Kevin Mark.

But Lueth’s sister, Elizabeth Crum, said she fears the case will not end well.

“We are all extremely, extremely worried. We fear the worst because she was doing so well, and she was so cheerful,” Crum said. “There’s just no way that she took off.”

Lueth was last seen by her friend Rick Stilgenbauer, who has subleased the apartment below her for the past five months. She recently broke up with her boyfriend, who had lived with her. He moved out of the apartment they shared between Nov. 6 and 11, Stilgenbauer said.

“She was dealing with everything how she always does — confidently and soundly,” he said. “She’s a very strong-headed woman, she takes care of business.”

Lueth and Stilgenbauer talked in his kitchen Nov. 11 between 5:30 and 6 p.m., after Lueth returned from class at MSU. She was concerned because her ex-boyfriend moved out and her rent would increase. She was planning to sell her truck and start working as a waitress to pay her bills, Stilgenbauer said.

“She was hopeful, sound, planning for the future,” he said.

After Lueth left his apartment, Stilgenbauer did not hear anything from her upstairs apartment.

“I didn’t hear anyone come back in or out, I never heard anyone leave after that. It was all very quiet,” he said.

Stilgenbauer and Lueth’s father, Roy Lueth, both called Krista Lueth on Nov. 12, but her phone went directly to voicemail.

“I’m in contact with Krista all the time,” her father said.

But when none of Krista Lueth’s friends or family could reach her, they were worried, Stilgenbauer said.

Roy Lueth drove to his daughter’s home Friday to look around and said her cat was alone in the apartment.

“She’d never leave her cat if she went anywhere,” he said.

Roy Lueth said he did not want to speculate about the disappearance.

“All we know at this point in time is that she’s missing, and has been since Tuesday,” her father said.

As the investigation moves forward, Krista Lueth’s family and friends are looking for answers.

“It’s a double-edged sword – as much as you want to know, you fear hearing,” Crum said. “You want answers, but they’re probably going to be answers we don’t want.”

Krista Lueth is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs 125 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes, police said.

Anyone who has seen her or has any information is asked to contact the Michigan State Police at (517) 322-1907.

    Lueth failed to answer father

"Krista is studying," reads the message at the top of Krista Lueth's MySpace page.

It might have been the last thing she was doing before she disappeared Nov. 11.

"I typically talk to her once or twice a week, and maybe once a month or so, she comes down here or I go up to her," said Roy Lueth of St. Clair Township, her father.

He said he realized something was wrong the evening of Nov. 11 when he tried to get in touch with his daughter, who was living in Lansing, for help with a computer problem. The call went straight to voicemail.

"Krista never turns her phone off, so that was strange. So I called her again (Nov. 12) and got the same thing," he said. "Then I managed to get hold of one of her girlfriends."

On Nov. 13, Krista Lueth's friend
visited the house Krista, 34, rented and found nothing out of place. She didn't, however, find Krista.

She told Roy Lueth his daughter's cat still was in the apartment. This alarmed him, he said, because he knew Krista wouldn't leave the cat alone for so long.

He contacted the Lansing post of the Michigan State Police, which is continuing its investigation.

For the next two weeks, he assisted police any way he could, figuring out his daughter's class schedule and talking to people who knew her. He said she must have left her house about 6:10 p.m. and never made it to her 6:30 p.m. class.

Krista Lueth's missing person case remains open and Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information about her whereabouts. Roy Lueth also is offering $5,000 for information.

Krista Lueth had earned a botany degree, and had worked for several years at a consulting firm helping the Ingham County drain commissioner. She was about to complete her horticulture degree at Michigan State University, then planned to go to Cornell University to earn a graduate degree.

Roy Lueth's voice cracks as he talks about his daughter.

Krista came from her mother's house to live with him in her early teens.

"We went through a lot of problems. To make a long story short, by the time she was 18 or so, she finally decided to get her act together," he said.

Krista earned her General Education Diploma and went to St. Clair County Community College. Roy Lueth frequently helped her with her homework.

"Every time an animated-type movie would come out, we'd have dinner, we'd talk, we'd go to the movies, get a big popcorn and a box of Milk Duds -- that was our routine," he said.

He said Krista had a large collection of plants in her house, which the university's horticulture club will keep in a greenhouse.

"I have to clean (her) apartment out, and I can't do it," he said.

He said he also couldn't bring himself to look at pictures of a candlelight vigil at the university for Krista.

Right now, he said, he just wants to put his daughter to rest.

"This is just gut-wrenching. I guess the thing that I tell people is that she was not just a daughter. We were really best friends."

Family still awaits word on missing MSU student

    By Kyle Feldscher

    The State News

As the search for missing MSU horticulture student Krista Lueth enters a third month, friends and family are awaiting closure to a painful process.

Roy Lueth, Krista Lueth’s father, said Monday he’s hoping the $5,000 in reward money he has offered for information will help lead to her discovery, whether she is found alive or dead. Although police continue investigating the case as a missing persons case, Roy Lueth said he has given up hope of finding his daughter alive.

“We’re trying to find out where her body is,” Roy Lueth said. “It’s not a fact that she’s dead, it’s just my opinion.”

Krista Lueth, 34, was last seen Nov. 11 by her friend of eight years, Rick Stilgenbauer. He has lived in the unit below Lueth on the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing since last summer.

Detective Sgt. Kevin Mark of the Michigan State Police said in December that in order to change the case from missing persons to homicide, police would need some sort of evidence that Krista Lueth is dead. State police also are offering a $5,000 reward for tips leading to Krista Lueth’s discovery.

Mark, the lead investigator in the case, could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Crime Stoppers of Mid-Michigan, a nonprofit organization that works with police to get information on open cases, is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to Krista Lueth’s discovery.

Horticulture junior Kathy Koch, who organized a candlelight vigil for Lueth in December, said she’s still hopeful that Lueth’s body will be found, but like Roy Lueth, she does not believe Krista Lueth will be found alive.

“I’m a realist,” Koch said. “I think her family deserves some type of closure from a human standpoint.”

Roy Lueth said police investigating the case have done
their best to keep him informed.

“They have to be tight-lipped so things don’t get out that can hurt the case later on, assuming they find her and the person who did this to her,”
he said.

Koch said even though not everyone in the Department of Horticulture knew Krista
Lueth personally, her disappearance has affected
many people.

“I know I just talked to (professor) Art Cameron’s wife, and they’re still really affected,” Koch said. “(Lueth) was going to be working for him, so it really bothers her.”

Roy Lueth said he had a message for the person who has kidnapped his daughter.

“Just tell us where she is so we can put her to rest,” he said. “We just want closure.”

Anyone with information on Krista Lueth’s disappearance should call the Michigan State Police Lansing Post at 517-322-1907 or Crime Stoppers at 517-483-7867.

Missing woman believed killed - Kevin Grasha • kgrasha@lsj.com • October 1, 2009 • From Lansing State Journal

Police: Slaying of MSU student, 34, who vanished last Nov. not random

Roy Lueth wants the chance to bury his daughter, who disappeared last November and who police now say was the victim of a homicide.

For the first time since 34-year-old Krista Lueth was reported missing, police said Wednesday they believe someone killed her and that it was not a random act.

The Michigan State University student's body has never been found. Investigators hope publicity about the case leads to tips or new information.

"If they could just get a break, we could at least put her to rest," Roy Lueth said.

"Whoever did this has talked to someone," he added. "Somebody out there knows something. Or has seen something."

Up to $15,000 in reward money is now being offered to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Krista Lueth was last seen Nov. 11, 2008 at the house she rented in the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing.

It is believed she left the house that night between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m, possibly wearing a long black coat. Investigators do not know where she was going.

Her father, who lives in St. Clair, said he has been trying to figure that out since he reported her missing four days later.

Detective First Lt. Dan Pekrul, who is heading a team of Michigan State Police investigators working on the case, said they have identified a person of interest. He would not say how the person knew Lueth.

Pekrul said investigators are trying to find anyone who might have seen Lueth - who had long brown hair and blue eyes - the evening of Nov. 11.

Maybe someone saw a woman fitting her description crying or involved in an argument, he said.

"We just need more pieces of the puzzle," he said. "Who saw her, and where, after she left her (home)."

Police also are asking hunters and others who are out in area woods and fields to be on the lookout for clothing or a coat that seems out of place. That could lead to her body.

"We want them to keep this case in the back of their minds and contact law enforcement," Pekrul said.

Roy Lueth said he has filled his home with Krista's things, including souvenirs and photographs from places they visited - Chicago, Niagara Falls, South Africa.

He called Krista, who he raised on his own since she was about 12, his best friend.

She was working on a second bachelor's degree, in horticulture, and was planning to attend graduate school in that field.

When she left her home the evening of Nov. 11, she locked the door, leaving her cat inside, according to friends. An overhead light was left on in the living room and she left a pan of food on the stove, covered by a plate.

"She went with someone she trusted," Roy Lueth said.

In '95, my friend Tina Biggar went missing in MI. She was a student at OU. I hope the outcome is better for Krista.

Media Investigation of Inaction on Local Cold Cases Reveals Police Failed to Lodge DNA on CODIS

The Lansing City Pulse had intended to run a special series highlighting the missing in their area. As a result of their attempts to get basic information on their police dept's current list of cold cases, they have uncovered a series of serious errors & oversights.

Krista's case is discussed specifically in the final paragraph & the detail will be devastating for the family & friends of every person who has an unsolved missing &/or homicide case being handled by this department. Krista's case has now been removed from the Lansing Police Dept & handed over to the State Police, who have refused to discuss why the case was taken from the LPD.

A convicted rapist who police have called the only suspect in the apparent killing of a Michigan State University student in 2008 has been jailed in connection with an unrelated case involving soliciting a minor for sex, authorities said.

Brad Cournaya, of Mason, was arraigned Friday on four felony charges, including recruiting a minor for sexually abusive activities and using a computer to commit a crime, according to records in 55th District Court.

A magistrate set a $250,000 cash bond for Cournaya.

Cournaya has served prison time for raping a woman at knifepoint, as well as a separate case involving allowing a child into his room to view pornography.

In October 2014, Michigan State Police named Cournaya as the lone suspect in the November 2008 disappearance and apparent death of Krista Lueth, his one-time girlfriend.

The 34-year-old Lueth was last seen Nov. 11, 2008 at her home on Eureka Street in Lansing. Her body has never been found. Her family has said she dated Lueth for several months before the couple broke up about a week before she disappeared.

Cellphone records show Cournaya was the last person Lueth called on the day she disappeared, police said. Her driver's license, bank card and cellphone were found along U.S. 127 south of Lansing, where Cournaya's vehicle had broken down the night Lueth disappeared.

The current case against Cournaya stemmed from an allegation that he solicited a minor female for sex in Mason in January, state police Detective Lt. Tom DeClercq said.

A hearing to determine whether he should stand trial on those charges is set for March 2. Court records show he asked for a court-appointed attorney

In 1985, Cournaya was charged with breaking into a Mason woman's apartment and raping her while brandishing a knife. He pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal sexual conduct and served his maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. He later served nearly eight years in prison for second-degree child abuse and was paroled in 2007, state corrections officials said.

In late 2014, Cournaya was sentenced to six months' probation and ordered to pay more than $1,200 in fines and costs for violating the state's sex offender registry. At sentencing, he told a judge he was being unfairly targeted because of his past.

The investigation in the current case involving Cournaya is still ongoing, as is the investigation in Lueth's disappearance, DeClercq said.

Anyone with information about those cases is asked to call 517-636-0703.

Ex-boyfriend charged with killing Michigan State University student missing since 2008

    https://www.whio.com/news/trending/e...LZRU3W3S37JIY/

LANSING, Mich. ' More than a decade after a Michigan State University student vanished without a trace, her sex offender ex-boyfriend has been charged in her presumed death.

Brad Cournaya, 53, of Mason, is charged with open murder in the disappearance of 34-year-old Krista Robin Lueth, according to the Lansing State Journal. Cournaya was already in prison, serving 16 to 40 years on charges involving sex trafficking of a minor and using a computer to commit a crime.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the murder charge against Cournaya at this time when he has long been the prime suspect in Lueth's disappearance.

Prosecutors told the court at Cournaya's 2017 sentencing on the unrelated charges that he has 'almost no rehabilitative potential,' the State Journal reported.

'We have a defendant who stands before you here today who has a lifelong adult criminal history of violent sexual crimes against women and children,' prosecutor Bill Crino said.

Cournaya's criminal life began early. At 18, he was charged with breaking into an apartment in Mason and raping the woman who lived there at knifepoint. In 1986, he was sentenced to serve 10 to 15 years in prison.

He was released in June 2000 after serving 14 years, but was soon in trouble again. After assaulting a female relative, he was sentenced to up to eight years for child abuse.

He was paroled in 2007. He and Lueth met and began dating in early 2008, authorities and her family said.

Cournaya's current prison sentence stemmed from his showing a 15-year-old girl a cellphone photo of his penis, as well as a sex video, court records show. He also showed her messages on his phone asking if she wanted to make money.

Cournaya denied the allegations against him and told the court the prosecutors and police were targeting him because they suspected his involvement in Lueth's disappearance.

'These photos, which in fact do not exist, were used to incriminate me in the jury's eyes,' Cournaya told a judge in 2017. 'Mr. Crino and his detectives are the ones trying to prosecute me for a homicide.

'And that's what this is all about, an alleged homicide.'

    A mysterious disappearance

Lueth, who had already earned a degree in botany, was studying for a second bachelor's degree in horticulture, according to the Charley Project, a nonprofit organization that highlights missing persons cases.

Following her classes on Nov. 11, 2008, Lueth took the bus home to her rented house on Eureka Street.

'Lueth was subletting an apartment on the floor below her to a friend and spoke to him between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m.,' the Charley Project website states. 'She was concerned because she'd broken up with her live-in boyfriend and he had just moved out, so her rental costs would increase. She said she planned to sell her truck and take a part-time waitress job to make ends meet.'

    That live-in boyfriend was Cournaya.

Lueth's father later told investigators that his daughter had complained that Cournaya would not stop calling her following the breakup, which occurred a week or two before she disappeared, the State Journal reported.

'I don't know what happened,' Lueth's longtime friend Murray Stewart-Jones told Crime Watch Daily in 2015. 'Whatever happened, it wasn't good.'

The friend who lived below Lueth told detectives that she was upbeat during their talk and that after she returned to her apartment, all was quiet.

'She was supposed to attend at 6:30 p.m. class at a greenhouse half a mile from home, but never showed up. She has never been heard from again,' the Charley Project site states.

Lueth's friends grew worried when they could not reach her. A search of her apartment revealed her beloved cat, Moet, was locked inside, alone.

The living room light was on and there was a covered pan of food on the stove, as though Lueth was interrupted while cooking.

'It looked like someone who was studying had left ' but who was coming back,' Lueth's friend, Juline Jordan, told the State Journal in 2008.

'She went with someone she trusted,' her father, Roy Lueth, said in 2009.

All sources on the case reported that it was highly unlikely that Lueth would have left on her own.

'Her loved ones describe(d) her as a reliable, responsible woman who wouldn't have abandoned her pet or left without warning,' the website states. 'She was a very good student and planned to apply to a graduate program at Cornell University.'

Cournaya quickly became a person of interest in the case.

The State Journal reported that cellphone records showed that Cournaya was the last person Lueth called the day she vanished. Evidence also showed he was in the area of her home.

A deputy later reported that on the night of Nov. 11, he'd stopped to help Cournaya after Cournaya's truck broke down on U.S. 127 near College Road, about eight miles from Lueth's home. When Cournaya said a tow truck was en route, the deputy left.

Months later, when police searched the area of that encounter, they found Lueth's driver's license, her debit card and her broken cellphone. Cournaya also gave police inconsistent statements and was 'untruthful as to his whereabouts,' a detective previously told the State Journal.

Lueth's disappearance was declared a homicide in September 2009, the newspaper reported. Cournaya was named the prime suspect in the case in 2014, six years after Lueth disappeared.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Tom Declercq, who has since retired, told Crime Watch Daily in 2015 that he believed Cournaya was responsible for Lueth's death. He also revealed a potential motive for the couple's breakup.

'In addition to that, he ended up charging in excess of $500 on her cellphone for pornography,' Declercq said.

The former detective theorized that Lueth got in a vehicle with Cournaya and an argument ensued. 'Pings' from Cournaya's cellphone put him close to her home that night.

'I believe she said something to him that made him angry,' Declercq said. 'Because he was trying to get the relationship going again. But that wasn't going to happen.

'I believe she said something to him that caused him to snap.'

Crime Watch Daily paid a visit to Cournaya's mother's house, where a shirtless and tattooed Cournaya soon showed up with his wife. When asked about Lueth's disappearance, he declined to talk at length.

'You're on my mom's property and I will drop your a--,' he told the cameraman. 'Guaranteed.'

Cournaya disparaged Lueth's reputation in the brief encounter.

'They make her seem like a goody-two-shoes,' he said. 'She's a crackhead, a drug addict, an alcoholic.'

'So do you feel like you're being railroaded and treated unfairly'' the reporter asked.

    'Yeah,' he responded.

Roy Lueth told the news program that he needed answers.

'I just want to know where she is, so I can put her to rest,' Roy Lueth said.

Stewart-Jones recalled her friend's 'infectious' laugh. She wept as she talked about her friend.

'I miss her every day,' she said.

Stewart-Jones wrote about Cournaya's murder charge on Facebook last week.

'Big day across the board,' she wrote. 'My good friend Krista, whom many miss dearly, just may get some justice.'
