Thomas Burket (27) committed suicide after a battle with heroin addiction

http://mydeathspace.com/article/2008...roin_addiction

This one really struck me this morning. The writer, although a bad speller, was very eloquent. It was very touching. I guess, if nothing else, at least towards the end of his life, he was able to pull himself together and repair what little relationship they had. To bad, as always it would seem, looking back at it now it seemed to little to late.

So many people just throw their lives away with and for drugs. I understand addiction, bit I guess I am having difficulty processing the "why' of it all.

I agree. I think when people write those sad eulogie-type pieces and then I read them on here, it makes the death seem more real. Like, normally if I'm reading MDS stories, I don't think the gravity of anyone's situations really sinks in until I read how sad those left behind are...

I don't really understand addiction, to be honest, but I hate enablers. Surely people can see when someone is really suffering from an addiction rather than just a recreational habit. I'm not referring to his family at all, I'm talking about his so-called friends

My heart goes out to this guy. Drug addiction is such a gruesome thing to deal with. He was just sick and tired of being sick and tired. The constant tug of war of addiction takes a toll on you, and it sounds like he just couldn't take any more. To "fall" again and again to something you despise so deeply...you to not only despise the drug, but also start despising yourself for putting yourself through it. It is a shame that Thomas didn't get the support that he needed to conquer this demon. :-(

I am a Pharmacy Technician and I see addiction at its worst on a daily basis almost. I am also a volunteer EMT and have had to response to overdoses. I feel horrible for this family and I too believe that it is such a horrible demon that can not be kicked on its own! This was a nice heartfelt submission in memory of her loved one. My heart goes out to this family. May you find peace and comfort knowing that he is no longer struggling in his everyday life. He will live on thru your memories forever.

I cannot say where I heard this, but it always comes back to me here. "There are four words in every addicts vocabulary..."I want to die."" This usually occurs when they hit rock bottom after several attempts at sobriety. I can only imagine what it must be like for these people. The problem is that they don't want to get high any more, but they fear the absolute Hell involved in kicking. Some drugs are worse than others. Anyone that has tried to kick an opiate habit knows that life would be better dead than trying to kick again and again. Wouldn't it be better to die than lay awake at night rocking back and forth and sweating? Wouldn't it be better to die than going without sleep night after night puking and shitting constantly? Wouldn't it better to die than to be shitting, sweating, rocking, moving, hallucinating and feeling like every electrical point in your body has be over juiced? You can't stop your arms from moving and feeling like there are a ton of ants marching up and down them. Your legs keep jumping of their own accord and you cannot keep them still?
"I caught sight of my reflection, I caught it in the window. I saw the darkness in my heart. I saw the signs of my undoing."

wow that eulogy was very sad. I hope whoever wrote it will come on here (and be nice) and tell us more about their brother.

RIP Thomas.

I lost my son in 2006 the same way with the same circumstances. He died from hanging while trying to overcome his heroin addiction. I'm so sorry for your family. I struggle with his death every minute.

I am Toms sister. I came across this when I was bored and googled his name. I was nervous to read the comments on here. I have heard of people's stories being posted on this and friends and family members of the deceased beinig horrified by what they read. Im glad to see nothing here to make me cringe. My brother was an amazing person and he would give anyone the shirt off his back. I saw one girl wrote she wanted me to come on here to tell you more about him....what would you want to know?

hmm...not even sure where to start on this one...not gunna lie. he was the biggest ass hole i had ever met sometimes...but only to me. :) part of the job description. he got all the lying genes....i cant lie to save my life...he could pull the most random detail oriented lies out of his ass...then look at me later with a shy little chuckle as he admitted he had no fuckin clue where it came from. he fooled the military on quite a few occasions...even got honorable discharge from not going...no idea how he pulled that off. glad he did though...he had the military funeral...flag and taps. it was beautiful...kind of like a movie..in more ways then one. he had a way with animals and little kids....he was incredibly handsome.....and we had previously discussed death about two months before this happend but oddly enough the conversation was about my own death and ceremonies not his. (and no im not suicidal...just one of those random conversations that come up between siblings who have very limited conversation left to discuss).

Re: Thomas Burket (27) committed suicide after a battle with heroin addiction

my brother passed not to suicide but from a heroin overdose. i know its not the same thing, but this article really hit me. my brother was in the marines and when got out of boot camp, got very lonely, so when he came home on a visit he met a old friend that he had knew in high school and decided within a week to marry her and accept her 3 children and the one she was pregnant with. she stayed behind, while he went back to where he was stationed. on his next visit he came to us and said that he had made a mistake about marrying her, he said he had found out she was a heroin addict but was taking methadone while she was pregnant. But he decided to stay with her till the baby was born to see if she would stay off of heroin. but she didnt. my brother had done other drugs before but he always too, use to say that he would never, ever use heroin. so he told her her he was going to file for divorce and she went crazy and started telling she had been cheating on him and didnt even like him and was using him for his benefits. so he was pretty hurt, but thought now he was definitly making the right choice, by divorcing her. on his next visit, and i have no idea why, but he stayed at her house, the second night he was here, my others brothers went to visit him to make sure everything was ok. when they got there he said she had talked him into trying heroin for the first time and he was pretty out of it. they offered to take him with them so they could watch him, but he said he be ok, that he was gonna take a shower and go to sleep. so that was the last they heard, we heard from him. he passed away that night. we'll never know what happened if she purposely gave him more than he could handle, i dont know. i blamed her at first but my brother could have said no. i miss him very much. weird thing is 2 years later, my stepmom was looking thru the paper and found his wifes obiturary, she passed away as well, i dont know how but im sure heroin might have had something to do with it..

sorry for getting off the topic.
rip thomas.

:-( I'm really sorry about your brother. It's good to see that you're thinking about your happy memories together and not dwelling on the bad.

I can somewhat relate to what you're going through. A year ago my brother's best friend shot himself because of a drug addiction... it's a terribly sad situation, but atleast they are no longer struggling with the constant internal conflict brought along by an addiction.

I hope you and your family are doing well. :-)

that is horrible!! its almost worst when you know there is a cunt bag out there that can hold alot of the responsiblity (like the two 'friends' of my brothers). It sucks either way, and either way we cant get them back. Im sorry for your loss....and thank you for sharing your story. Im sorry that you are in the fallen battle buddy club with me.
