Re: Jaqueline Becker and sister killed by cop who ran a stop sign

I'm not sure that there would be anything else criminally that could be done to a civilian other than a ticket unless they were under the influence of drugs/alcohol or driving w/out a license. It's a sad situation.
How about two counts of vehicular manslaughter? Just because you wear a badge doesn't mean you get to use lethal force against any person any time. A badge is not a license to kill.

I T-boned a cop who ran a red light, despite having his lights and sirens activated it was still his fault. After the fact he thanked me for not being a dick about it (no lawsuit). I figured the get out of jail free card was worth it.

He may be charged with that still. There is an ongoing investigation. I never said it was.

Cops that kill people for no reason really piss me off.Â*

This fucker who killed these two girls is probably not going to get any kind of punishment, and that breaks my heart. You are given a very special set of rights when you put on a uniform. A respect. A comfort to people around you. I can't imagine being killed by a policemen while doing nothing illegal.

The laws of the land are probably on his side--I just hope that the laws of the next world are not.Â*

Also, I'd have to disagree about the respect. People treat cops appallingly; they abuse them, they give them too much shit when they're just trying to do their job and generally treat them as if they're all corrupt thugs waiting to abuse their power and cause trouble just for the sake of it. Yet, the moment anything bad happens, they run crying to the police and expect them to put the world on hold until their problem is solved. The police have to scrape body parts off the road after car accidents, wade through murder scenes, deal with raped women and sexually abused children, sort out violent domestic disputes, attempt to reason with the mental patients in the midst of psychosis and find treatment for them, tell people their loved ones have died, have psychopaths wave weapons at them... and all for crappy pay.

most cops are good….like any profession you have your assholes, and this cop is one of them….I feel so sad for the young girls that lost their lives in this tragic horrific senseless act….and my prayers go out to their loved ones. As for the cop well what can you say mans law will apply here he must live with the fact that he was responsible for two deaths, and answer for that on judgment day
when things go wrong and you know they will,
and your daily rode seems all up hill.
and when your sad and blue and want to quit
remember one thing I DON'T GIVE A SHIT

I think the police need to slow down and follow the rules of the road, at least when they are not on a call. They tend to disregard the rules(of the road) and it may become such a habit that they are being negligent without really even realizing it. I hope it doesn't take too many more cases like this for them to see what is happening.

Here's a case from Portland Oregon.

This site is called bad cop news. I stumbled across it trying to get an update about the case I linked above.

    THANK YOU misanthrope!

Every darn site I go to has people completely bashing all police officers, saying how all of them suck and such (usually because the person posting was speeding and SURPRISE! got a ticket for it). Yet, the moment something bad happens to them, guess who is on scene to save their ass? Yep, the good ol' police department.

It would be akin to me saying "Gosh, a lot of murderers on MSD are white males in their 20's. I HATE white males in their 20's! They're all scum! They'd shoot their own mother (or rape their own mother, as the news was reporting yesterday) for a dime bag!"

Cape May Court House, N.J. - February 27, 2007 - - A grand jury has indicted a New Jersey State Trooper on charges related to a crash in Cape May County that killed two sisters.

Robert Higbee faces two counts of vehicular homicide, second degree crimes, in connection with the deaths of 17-year-old Jacqueline Becker, and 19-year-old Christina Becker, back on September 27, 2006.

Higbee's cruiser collided with a car they were in at Stagecoach Road and Old Tuckahoe Road in Marmara.

Investigators say Higbee was speeding and hit the Beckers' car after running a stop sign while pursuing a vehicle going above the speed limit.

The Beckers were on their way to pick up milk when they died.

Investigators tell Action News the black box in Higbee's cruiser helped them determine valuable information, including how fast the cruiser was going at the time of the crash. The exact speed has not been released.

Witnesses also came forward and helped police in the probe.

If convicted, Higbee could be inmprisoned for at least five to ten years. He was previously cited for Failure to Stop and Careless Driving.

I'm glad that he has been indicted. This kind of thing makes me so mad.

    I generally dislike cops.

I would estimate that 90% of cops I've encountered were assholes for no reason. Yes, it's a stressful job, yes, people have bad days, but if you consistently have bad days at work (this goes with any profession, especially public service, customer service, etc.) maybe you should consider a new profession.

    Update:

    http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=local&id=5352198

UPPER TOWNSHIP, N.J. - May 30, 2007 - An Upper Township mother has filed a lawsuit against the New Jersey State Police, and an on-duty trooper, responsible for a traffic accident that killed her two daughters last September.

In the suit, Maria Caiafa, says trooper Robert Higbee was driving at an excessive speed without flashing emergency lights or sirens before the accident.

Authorities say the trooper was traveling 60 miles per hour when his patrol car ran a stop sign on Old Tuckahoe Road and slammed into the minivan killing her daughters Jacqueline and Christina Becker.

The two girls where on the way to the market for milk.
