“Choking game” considered in hanging death of 8-year-old

Detectives investigating the death of an 8-year-old boy who was found hanging in his Trenton home Tuesday night say they are considering the possibility that he was playing the "choking game."

An autopsy yesterday by the Mercer County Medical Examiner's Office found that the boy's death was a result of acute asphyxiation due to hanging, according to a release from Detective Sergeant Pedro Medina, Trenton Police's Public Information Officer.

Preliminary findings suggest that the death was accidental. Detectives do not have enough evidence to confirm their suspicion that the "choking game" - a game usually played by 9-to-16-year-olds for a brief sense of euphoria - is connected, said Medina's release.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of Woodland Street after receiving a call of a juvenile not breathing, police said.

When officers arrived, they learned that the boy had been found hanging in the third floor of the home.

He was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Trenton, where he was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m.

    Ugh:
