Eating disorders are not new. Anorexia has its roots as far back as the 13th century. It was seen often with religious women who were actually canonized as being saints for their fasting practices. These woman are often referred to as "holy anorexics." Eating disorders probably occurred in other societies for different reasons than in our own. The cultures in which these young women lived valued spiritual health, fasting, and self-denial much as our own values thinness, self-control and athleticism. Holy anorexia provided women with a highly valued status in both church and society. When the definition of holiness was altered, so eventually was the incidence of holy anorexia.

doesnt seem like a joke - They are really saying what obesity causes but they are mixing facts with rudeness and irresponsibility.  i posted it because i just am disgusted, mind you i have a HUGE sense of humor but - this is just plain stupid.

I do agree though..if under-eating is qualified as a mental disorder, the same should apply for overeating and I think there should be no question about whether insurance companies will pay for treatment for either.

You know there is a difference between anorexia and anorexia nervosa.

I probably could be diagnosed as anorexic, but I do not have anorexia nervosa. Anorexia can be caused by physical problems, disease or medications. I am sure there can be psychological reasons for it that have nothing to do with appearance or weight too.

Anorexia Nervosa-an eating disorder which people do not eat correctly due to the obsessive fear of weight gain.
Anorexia-the general symptom of decreased appetite.

My insurance will pay for unlimited visits with a nutritionist for anorexia, or anorexia nervosa but it is limited to two visits for obesity. WTF? The nutritionist didn't help a whole lot though! I drink a lot of carnation instant breakfast, she figured out that I'm maintaining my weight due to appropriate amounts of calories being consumed. But the point was to go to them to figure out ways to help me improve my diet. Not just rely on liquid nutrients.

My cat got anorexia from a medication. And she is not a spoiled brat.....well yea I suppose she is!

I don't know how I read that into your text I just did, unfortunately, perhaps I was being oversensitive, perhaps I don't know you well enough to be aware that you use this tone with everyone, this is why I returned to edit my post, I wasn't going to remove my post but instead added to it to note that actually you were using that tone with others too.
