A man was charged early Wednesday with aggravated battery to a child after allegedly biting an infant boy, breaking five ribs and puncturing the baby's liver in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side Friday, according to police.
Zachary Johnson, 20, was charged with aggravated battery to a child, according to police. The felony charge was approved at 3:02 a.m. and Johnson was arrested at 3 a.m. Monday on the Near West Side at 2002 W. Ogden Ave.
The suspect and the 3-month-old baby’s mother got into an argument about 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the 1700 block of West 47th Street when he allegedly forcefully took child from her and ran into the bedroom and locked the door, according to police.
The woman could hear him allegedly striking the baby with an open hand, but was able to unlock the door and get in the room to retrieve the child, who was having trouble breathing and was taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County where police were contacted. The baby was transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where doctors found the child had five broken ribs, a punctured liver, bite marks and various bruises all over the body, according to police.
A condition update was not immediately available Wednesday morning.
Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
