What is the reason?

I think it's a CDC recommendation, that most peeps coming in with flu symptoms now have H1N1 and the treatment will be the same whether they are positive or not.

Ok I get it. I was wondering about the CDC. I was thinking they would want an accurate number.

The following facts support the CDC recommendation:

n Rapid FLU screening testing is only 10 percent to 70 percent sensitive for H1N1 type. Therefore, up to 90 percent of negative Rapid FLU tests could be falsely negative; meaning that a negative Rapid FLU test does not rule out H1N1. CDC recommends Rapid FLU testing with H1N1 confirmation of positives in patients with severe influenza requiring hospitalization to ensure a proper and accurate diagnosis.

Annnd I can't give you the link to that because I've lost the page now. Sorry.

I was so rude to this guy in CVS the other night.  There was a pretty long waiting line to check out.  Two ladies were talking about Flu Clinics and one of the ladies said that they wouldn't give her the shot becasue she was healthy not in the high risk group.

Mr Genius jumps in and tells them to lie.  He said he lied and said he takes care of his mother who is a cancer patient and is having chemo so he "qualiified".  I said ..........That's horrible!  I said that for every person that lies means someone who is really in the high risk category will go without and that to me was very selfish way of thinking.

Silence followed.

I've heard that shit is happening here too Tink. We give flu vaccs to carers and we've had people who we know aren't carers claiming they are to get the vaccination.
People are really annoyed that only the high risk groups are getting it.  undecided
I've been asked if I want one, I've declined.

FIRST FELINE H1N1 CASE:
Cat catches flu

A 13-year-old cat in Iowa has been infected with swine flu.

It's believed to be the first case of the H1N1 virus in a feline in the United States.

The domestic shorthaired cat was treated last week at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames and has recovered, officials said Wednesday.

The veterinarian who treated the cat, Dr. Brett Sponseller, said two of the three people in the cat's Iowa home had flu-like symptoms before the cat became ill. The cat was lethargic, had a loss of appetite and appeared to have trouble breathing. Getting children vaccinated for swine flu also can help prevent the illness from spreading to pets. There is no swine flu vaccine for pets.
I think we should halt all production of vaccines for people and work diligently on finding a pet one.

That's for my homey ron.

For reals though, I'm getting mine Friday.

EDIT: I qualify as the high risk group because of the population I work with.  I'm not too concerned about them though, really, its the other parade of degenerates I come into contact with because of the places they go.

Shots for the rich?  Vaccine Bailout!

Wall Street get's flu vaccine ahead of school children and clinics

Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and other large city employers have started receiving small quantities of swine flu vaccine for high-risk employees

To the list of hundreds of schools, hospitals, and community health centers that have received limited allocations of the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, you can now add some of New York's largest employers. In the past week or so 13 companies, including Citigroup (C) and Goldman Sachs (GS), have begun receiving small quantities of the vaccine, according to city health authorities.

Citigroup has been supplied with 1,200 units and Goldman with 200, says Jessica Scaperotti, press secretary for the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene. The agency has so far approved orders by 29 employers—including 16 that have yet to receive any vaccine—after they were cleared by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). Big employers that have received or are scheduled to receive vaccine so far include Time Warner (TWX), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Memorial Sloan-Kettering, New York Presbyterian Healthcare System, and New York University.

Health-care workers at those employers are bound by the CDC to distribute the vaccine only to populations deemed to be at high risk of developing serious complications from swine flu: pregnant women, children and young people aged 6 months to 24 years, people who live with or provide care for infants under 6 months (who cannot be vaccinated), people aged 24 to 64 with medical conditions that put them at higher risk for flu-related complications, and health-care workers and emergency medical personnel. A spokeswoman for Goldman, who asked not to be named, said the company had just received the vaccine and did not yet have information as to how it would be distributed, saying that Goldman will supply vaccine only to those who qualify as high-risk, per the CDC requirements. Citigroup had not responded with a comment as of the evening of Nov. 2.

I work in a hospital and still have not received mine. My daughter goes to college and is getting her's Mon.

I know she is around all those kids and crap but I work with sick people and yet I have got nothing.

Oh well if I get this flu I will have to call out. Not much I can do about that.

Some news show had an interview regarding this topic and the guy was defending the decision because he said the crowded conditions of the trading floor is similar to that of a school or health care facility.

Sorry buddy - WRONG!

I had my jab today. I've got it for the simple reason that I'm pretty sure I can cope with the flu, but there are people involved in my life who would be really sick if they got it. Plus if they did catch it from me and anything happened to them I would be mortified.
Plus we often pick up all sorts of nasty bugs in work and I don't want to pass it on.
It didn't hurt at all ( I have a high pain threshold ), some of the folks who had theirs yesterday say their arm is slightly sore, that's all.

Jack and I had ours last week. Sam or V don't fit in a high risk group. I'm not sure that Jack does either, but I was at the pediatrician for another matter and while we were there I simply asked if he could get both his flu shots and they gave them to him for $30 with no questions.  I had to prove I was an asthmatic at the town clinic over the phone, and fax stuff, but I don't think they screened me at all when I got there. I think anyone could have shown up and gotten one, except I heard them not allowing people over 65 to have one.

2 more people died in Dallas county yesterday. 20 somethings with no previous medical problems.

EDIT

"The deaths of two men, a 24-year-old and an 18-year-old, were confirmed as the county's 18th and 19th H1N1-related deaths, "

How wouldn't V be in a high risk group with her just getting over viral meningitis? You would think she would be if her immune system isn't back to normal.

Right? The doctor tells her on Monday, on her follow up appointment from being released, that she should get the shot. We set up on Wednesday to go to the clinic. The clinic wants something faxed from the doctors. He tells the nurse that we're not in the high risk group and they refuse to  fax anything. I had to use my prescription history from CVS to get my proof.

Fucking asshole.

we're going to find a new, less scatter brained doctor.

That would be a good idea, especially if she keeps getting the meningitis! What a maroon! Hug

Boston (DbTechNo) - According to the findings from a new report, the swine flu virus has killed more than 17,000 Americans.

The virus originated in Mexico last April and wasted little time sweeping the globe infecting thousands in its path.

The WHO quickly acted in announcing an outbreak of pandemic proportions and are still weary of removing this title today despite a drop in cases.

The CDC report finds that out of the more than 17,000 Americans killed by swine flu, more than 1800 of them were children.

“CDC estimates that between 41 million and 84 million cases of 2009 H1N1 occurred between April 2009 and January 16, 2010,” the agency said in a statement.

A scarey finding from the CDC report is the realization that the swine flu virus appears to affect younger people more than older people.

Vaccines are now available to protect people from the virus, but many people are not interested in receiving them because of a drop in cases.
