DEKALB, Ill. - A gunman opened fire in a lecture hall on the campus of Northern Illinois University, and more than a dozen people were reported injured.

WBBM in Chicago reported that a man with a shotgun began shooting in a lecture hall, and the (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reported that police said on a scanner that the man had a shotgun and a pistol.

Hospitals in the area were told to expect up to 15 injured people.

The university issued an alert at 3:20 p.m. CT telling students to avoid Kings Common and buildings in that area. A spokeswoman confirmed that the shooting occurred.

The university was locked down, and students reportedly were calling from the library.

The Daily Chronicle reported that at least two people are reported down in DuSable Hall, and one person had blood on the back of the head, according to eyewitness reports. It could not be confirmed if it was from a gunshot.

Police have established a perimeter around Cole Hall, and 15-20 emergency vehicles were in the area.

Guy who was in the class was just on the radio- said it was a huge lecture hall and the dude just got on the stage and started shooting into the crowd. No one can call home because the network is busy (not sure how he called the radio).

 DEKALB, Ill. - A gunman opened fire in a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, injuring as many as 15 people before he killed himself, authorities and the school said. "Police are confirming that the shooter is dead by a self-inflicted gunshot," the school said on its Web site.


The university issued a statement on its Web site about an hour after the 3 p.m. shooting that "the immediate danger has passed. The gunman is no longer a threat."

Kishwaukee Community Hospital spokeswoman Theresa Komitas told WLS-TV in Chicago it received 17 victims all with wounds from the shooting or flying debris, including three with serious injuries. She said she knew of no deaths at the hospital.

George Gaynor, a senior geography student, who was in Cole Hall when the shooting happened, told the student newspaper the Northern Star that the shooter was "a skinny white guy with a stocking cap on."

He described the scene immediately following the incident as terrifying and chaotic.

"Some girl got hit in the eye, a guy got hit in the leg," Gaynor said outside just minutes after the shooting occurred. "It was like five minutes before class ended too."

Witnesses said the young man carried a shotgun and a pistol. Student Edward Robinson told WLS that the gunman appeared to target students in one part of the lecture hall.

"It was almost like he knew who he wanted to shoot," Robinson said. "He knew who and where he wanted to be firing at."

All classes were canceled Thursday night and the 25,000-student campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents "as soon as possible" and were offered counseling at any residence hall, according to the school Web site.

Dominique Broxton, 22, a student from Oak Park, told the Chicago Tribune she could see two wounded students from her dorm room.

"The ambulance took away two students on the ground right outside my dorm," she said. "I don't know them. They looked bloody."

She said she saw a lot of confusion. "Students were running. People really didn't know what was going on. There is an intercom system inside the dorm. Someone came on and stated that someone had been caught. They said they caught the shooter and that we should remain calm and stay in our rooms. I am in my room now."

The school was closed for one day during final exam week in December after campus police found threats, including racial slurs and references to shootings earlier in the year at Virginia Tech, scrawled on a bathroom wall in a dormitory. Police determined after an investigation that there was no imminent threat and the campus was reopened.

The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week.

On Feb. 8, a woman shot two fellow students to death before committing suicide at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge. In Memphis, Tenn., a 17-year-old is accused of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student Monday during a high school gym class, and the 15-year-old victim of a shooting at an Oxnard, Calif., junior high school has been declared brain dead.

"One of the wounded was transferred by helicopter to Rockford Hospital, she said. There were no fatalities at the hospital, she said."

CBS just reported that in addition to the one transferred to Rockford, the other 2 "red alert" patients will be transferred within the hour.  The remaining 14 are expected to stay in the hospital one night.  They are showing pictures of one of the men that was shot twice, but survived.  I didn't catch his name, but so far he is the only victim to be named.

 I'll do my best not to make this thread about gun control but Ron, using that argument, I could say that since people are stupid when they drink, we should keep alcohol away from them.

 And that made sense to A LOT of people almost 100 years ago, and look how well that turned out.

 Most people aren't so crazy as to take weapons to a public place and start killing people. To punish everyone for the acts of a few is unfair, period.

 Yet, as much of a gun-loving, 2nd Amendment Constitutionalist as I am, I am a firm believer that you should not allow guns to be bought by violent criminals and that any firearm purchase should involve detailed and extensive background checks.

 Make guns easy to get for responsible, law-abiding citizens and impossible to get for violent criminals and lunatics.

 Don't punish me cause some asshole wants to act out on the world.
