I agree with some of the things you mention here Jen. But space is becoming a real issue for me. I won't stop buying them, but I do like the readers.

Smell of books in a can? Hahahaha, even I won't buy that.  wink

I understand the space issue.  That's why I donate so many, but I just can't stand the thought of losing the tactile pleasure of books for the impersonality of a gadget.  Plus, I'm more than a little paranoid at how much we're already tracked for marketing through the internet and text messages and I just see the Kindle/Nook or whatever as yet another means that my information is disseminated without my knowledge.  I know Facebook "spies" (for lack of a better word) as does Google and I already think Barnes and Noble is super aggressive in their marketing methods. . .it just makes me feel vulnerable.

Colleges are looking into the devices for textbooks.  It's a terrible idea.  Not only will students pay for the devices in their tuition, but then they'll have to pay for each textbook and the publishers aren't going to lower the prices just because it's digital.  So no longer can students share a textbook or buy a cheaper previous edition, they'll be at the mercy of textbook publishers.  Plus, they're college kids.  A kindle isn't going to last one year in a college freshman's backpack.   cheesy

I love gadgets and tech, but I refuse to change my books in for an impersonal glowing screen and fragile gizmo.  Besides, most of these devices are set up so you can't share books the way you can with a real book.  One download, one license with encryption so you can't drop it onto another device.  Great for publishers, bad for book lovers.   Until I am forced to go to such an unpleasant device by a publisher who refuses to publish real books, then I am avoiding all this nonsense.

Someone has actually created book smell in a can.  http://smellofbooks.com/  It's so lame.  Don't buy a digital book if you're going to miss real book smell and sensation that much.

I am mostly interested in it so I can carry it to work with me. I currently carry about 4 books in my purse to work because I never know what mood I will be in and what I will want to read. This option is a great way for me to lighten my load a little. I know for sure it absolutly will not come close to replacing books for me.....I love them to much....mmmm the smell!

This. I'm usually carrying at least 2 with me, and then along with my other junk, my bags are getting bigger and bigger.
I'm going to need this soon!

And I walk everywhere, so the weight is an issue. I'll still buy books, of course. I just like the idea of a reader. It would make my life so much easier. Plus I have a hard time getting rid of any, so if I can store tons on there I'll feel better.  embarrassed

The nook has the capabilities to loan your book to a friend for two weeks at which point it will come back to you.  And from what I read it just seems like BN is really trying to make it something to add to your library, not replace.  And they have thousands of books on there for free.  It's released on November 30 and I hope that my dad gets me one for christmas.  Praying

I imagine they want it to be like when we all switched from cassettes to CDs.  It will give publishers a chance to reissue older books for the new medium, thus garnering them a new revenue stream.

I understand the bag complaint, I really do.  I'm a college professor.  My bag weighs close 30+ pounds on an average day.  But I also know I'm very hard on my gizmos and a Kindle or Nook wouldn't survive very long with me and my schedule.  I can't fork out that kinda money on a device and then pay for each book and then have to worry about bugs, viruses, hacks, or most likely me dropping the damn thing on the ground.

I know it's the future, I'm just not on board with it.

i get it totally.  i don't want to want one.  i love books and i love carting them around with me.  but my limited space dictates i find another avenue for book hoarding.  And my hoarding dictates i do not get rid of the books i have because i am convinced i will read them again.  i can't bear to part with them.

I know how you feel.   Hug  I don't like to get rid of them, either, but we move so often that it becomes a necessity.  And I know the minute I see a Kindle or Nook up close it's going to be game over.  I'm just being a curmudgeon because I haven't been confronted with one.   cheesy

This! And some of you make great points for and against. I, too, love gadgets and I really want one. You guys have the way better choice over the pond though.
I'm considering a shopping spree over there. I wish.  tongue

I just looked this up, I've never heard of one. I've heard of kindle though and wanted one for a long time now. In the article I read, it says that you can loan ebooks to friends. Are they saying that you can share books with other Nook users? If so, I WANT WANT WANT. cheesy

Yes, what you it does (from what I read) is that you send it to your friend's Nook library (either with a username or their pin or something the nook has) and it will show up as checked out from your library so you can't read it but your friend can in theirs.  After two weeks, it's checked back into your library

I finished Sookie 8. I liked it way better than 7. I was bored with 7, didn't have much substance to it. This was way better.

I liked those. I've just ordered the next one, Tempted. I had ordered it a week or so ago but Play.com had it down for paperback release when that's actually only due next year, so I had to order it again in hardback. I love books, but I do prefer them in PB.
The series gets better as it goes along I think, Pheno.
Plus there's apparently a new one out in May called Burned.
Have a look on Amazon at the books on "used or new". I've found I can often pick up a new one for cheaper than Amazons price from a different seller.

I'm coming up to 100 pages into Snow Crash and it's starting to pick up. It was very explanatory at the beginning which at some points I found hard going, but I'm starting to really get into it now.

I bought 4 books today for 50 pence each.  Cheer

Bentley Little - The Policy
Michael Laimo - Deep In The Darkness
Jack Ketchum - The Lost
Zoe Daniels - Year Of the Cat Trilogy.

I was so excited to fond something by Bentley Little. I've been wanting to read him for ages but could never find anything out and about, only online.

Still enjoying Snow Crash. I love the terms used in this book.
