Two people are dead after a car went off the road and smashed into a tree early Sunday morning.

Omaha police and rescue crews were called out to an area just south of Oakridge Road on John J. Pershing Drive at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

A police investigation revealed a Mitsubishi Galant was headed north on John J Pershing Dr. when driver Elijah Griffin, 21, left the roadway to the right, spun down an embankment and hit a tree.

Griffin and his front passenger Deyonna Griffin, 21, were taken the hospital where Elijah Griffin died from his injuries. Deyonna Griffin suffered a head injury that is considered serious but not life-threatening.

A third passenger in the back of the car, 22-year-old Rylee Thornton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
