A 19-year-old woman and her boyfriend have been identified as those killed in a crash that injured 10 other people on the Newell Highway in central west New South Wales.

Gilgandra local Hannah Ferguson, 19, and her boyfriend Reagen Skinner died after a semi-trailer allegedly ploughed into a line of stopped traffic north of Dubbo yesterday.

Ten people were taken to hospital as a result of the crash which happened around 12.30pm yesterday.

NSW Police said they believed four cars, a B-double truck and a ute were stopped at a roadworks site when they were hit from behind by a semi-trailer.

An 18-year-old man was freed from his car and another person was freed from a truck after they were both trapped for more than four hours.

The 18-year-old was taken to Westmead Hospital with back burns while the other person is believed to have been flown to another trauma hospital in an unknown condition.

Superintendent Peter McKenna said specialist police will examine the vehicles involved, but it is too early to say exactly what happened.
