A Corsicana woman is dead and the driver of the car she was riding in is in custody following an early morning crash Saturday just south of Corsicana.

The Department of Public Safety identified the victim as Laketia Evans, 28. She was a passenger in a car driven by Calvin Scott, who is in custody on a charge of intoxication manslaughter, following the early morning crash in a field off of the Interstate 45 service road south of Corsicana.

Scott remains jailed as of Monday on bonds totaling $150,000.

DPS Spokesman Lonny Haschell said the crash was reported at 6:12 a.m. Saturday.

The crash occurred in a field off the northbound Interstate 45 service road, around the 226 milemarker, about a mile north of Angus. The vehicle, a white Ford Explorer SUV, exited the service road when Scott, the driver, over-corrected to the right. The vehicle struck a billboard sign pole, Haschell said.

Scott walked away from the scene, Haschell said, but was found a short time later by a Navarro County Sheriff's deputy on FM 739, which is more than a mile from the accident scene. Troopers were notified, and Scott was taken into custody.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Vicki Gray pronounced Evans dead at 6:52 a.m., and ordered an autopsy.

Troopers were at the scene of the crash for several hours Saturday morning conducting their investigation.
