A heartbroken girlfriend has been killed by a speeding train on the same stretch of track where her boyfriend died two months ago.

Hundred of tributes have been paid to Becky Tait, 20, who died on Sunday. Her boyfriend Phil James, 19, was killed after being hit by a train in September.

One friend named Adam said although they hadn't been together for long they had been pals for years.

He added: "They really got along and went to Portugal this summer, when Phil died she said she'd lost her soulmate.

"She was inconsolable and I don't think she coped well.

"Despite people trying to show their support she just shied away and went into her own little bubble. She didn't talk about it, which I don't think helped. It's a tragic loss of two good people. It is so sad."

Becky's family said in a statement: "Becky will be sadly missed by many people. Sadly Becky took her own life. We would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes, support and floral tributes."

Becky went to a charity rugby match in Phil's honour last month in Stone, Staffs, where the pair both lived.

Becky Davies, one of Phil's former rugby coaches, said: "Phil and Becky were in the same friendship group.

"This will have a double impact on their friends and it's horrendous. I felt devastated when I heard about it. As a parent, my thoughts are with her family.

"The fact they had to help her through the first situation with Phil and are now having to go through it themselves is something I couldn't even quantify. It's horrendous news and extremely sad."

Becky's friend Tom Arnold wrote on a Facebook tribute page: "You were the single most incredible, lovable, funny, compassionate, brilliant, entertaining person I've ever had the pleasure to meet!"

The Angels' singer paid a Twitter tribute after Phil's death, asking the teenager to "save me a pint in heaven". Stoke City fan Phil lived with parents Celia, 54, and Chris, 51, and brother Lee, 22.

Police are not treating Becky's death near Stone railway station as suspicious.
