A 2-year-old boy watched as his grandmother was mauled to death by the family's pet dog in their Ohio backyard Monday.
Cindy Whisman, 59, was babysitting the toddler at the child's Madison Township home when out of nowhere the dog, identified as a pit bull, turned on the woman and pinned her to the ground, said a neighbor.
That man, Wayne Walker, who heard Whisman's cries and ran to her rescue, managed to call 911 after beating the dog off with a walking stick, reported WCPO.
When sheriff's deputies arrived Whisman was found dead after suffering multiple injuries to her face, neck and body, said the Butler County Sheriff's Department.
"I wish he would have had a gun so he could have shot the dog," Whisman's daughter, Julie Whisman, told WCPO of her courageous neighbor, Wayne Walker.
Julie Whisman said her son and a second dog — also a pit bull — were out back with her mother who was babysitting when the attack around 1 p.m. occurred.
She described herself as shocked and dumbfounded, telling the news station that the attack was completely out of the ordinary.
Cindy Whisman's daughter, Julie Whisman, wasn't home when the attack happened. She called the dog's aggressive behavior completely out of the ordinary.
"It just doesn't add up to me," she said. "My son could sit on him, lay on him."
The dog was taken to the Butler County Animal Friends Humane Society.
Its owners have the option of retrieving the canine pending a judge's ruling. If they choose not to pick up the dog, it will be euthanized once the investigation is completed.
"These type of tragedies are happening way too often, family pet or not," said Sheriff Richard Jones.
