The two people killed in the fatal car accident on U.S. 23 Thursday afternoon were leaving Ann Arbor and going home for the holiday weekend.
Michigan State Police have not issued a release, but a relative of one of the deceased confirmed Friday that 19-year-old Dakota Gonzales and 18-year-old Curt Orlowski of Tecumseh died in the crash.
Michelle Gonzales, Dakota's mother, said her son was a student at Cornerstone University, where he played soccer. Orlowski was a rising sophomore at Northwood University, she said.
Gonzales and Orlowski had been working in Ann Arbor over the summer at in the University of Michigan facilities department.
"They were student workers," William Spencer, their supervisor, said.
"They did painting and cleaning and things like that. They were just working for the summer."
Gonzales said her son played soccer with Orlowski at Tecumseh High School and that team members held a memorial Friday where they painted a rock at the high school and took a slow lap around the field in memory of their former teammates.
Members of the Tecumseh community started a fundraiser through the GoFundMe website that has raised more than $7,000 to help the families cover funeral expenses and other costs.
The two were involved in what appeared to be a head-on collision with a pick-up truck that occurred on southbound U.S. 23 under the Michigan Avenue overpass shortly before 4:15 p.m.
Pittsfield Township Fire Chief Sean Gleason said Thursday that three people were in the sedan and that the driver of the pick-up, who was in the vehicle alone, had to be extricated with the Jaws of Life.
Gonzalez and Orlowski had been in the sedan and were pronounced dead at the scene. Gleason said two other people were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition and one in serious condition. It was unclear at the time if the pick-up driver was the patient in critical or serious condition.
According to Gonzales' mother, the third passenger in the sedan was released from the hospital Friday.
"They were just great boys, that's really all I can say," Spencer said.
Services for Orlowski will be held at the Anderson Funeral Home of Tecumseh. Gonzales' service will be held at the Handler Funeral Home in Tecumseh.
The Michigan State Police is continuing to investigate the incident.
