Authorities are investigating after a second body was found in De Soto in less than 24 hours.
The lawyer for the family of a missing Olathe man says a body found Tuesday matches the description of the man, who has been missing since Sunday.
Attorney Henry Cox says Johnson County sheriff's deputies contacted the family of 22-year-old Brad Cook on Tuesday to confirm what clothing Cook was wearing when he disappeared. Cox says the clothes on the body found in De Soto match what Cook was wearing.
They said they've concluded there is no connection between the one found in a field and another found a mile and a half away, and they want the community to know that no one else is in danger.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office was notified shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday after a body was found near West 85th and Ottawa streets in a field behind an apartment complex.
Deputies are investigating the "unattended death" of a man in his 20s.
This comes after another body was found about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 9500 block of Sunflower Road in De Soto.
"I am wondering. I think a lot of people are wondering if this is related. But this doesn't happen in De Soto," Susan Walton said.
Walton lives in the apartment complex and said the man was found just a few feet from her carport. She said one of her neighbors was leaving in the morning to take their children to school when they discovered the body and called 911.
Now many are feeling uneasy as they wonder who the victim is and whether a crime was committed.
"There's a lot of kids in this building and tomorrow is Halloween. I don't think anybody is going to be in the mood for trick-or-treating with something spooky like this," Walton said.
Deputy Tom Erickson with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department said investigators have been following leads all day and they have determined the two recently found bodies are not connected.
"What we can say is people should not be afraid," he said. "Our concern isn't that the community is at risk. If it was, we would take some other steps to protect the community."
The staff at a local bar and grill are worried that the latest body found is one of their employees, who is also the son of one of the owners. They say he did not live at the apartments, but a car towed from the crime scene is his.
The bar staff said they haven't seen him since Tuesday night and haven't been able to reach him. They are now awaiting an autopsy to see if what they fear is true, and they don't want to release his name until they know something for sure.
Authorities said they won't know a cause of death either until the autopsy is complete.
Investigators said it is extremely unusual to have two deaths within their city that are unexplained at the same time.
"Right now we have to look at all possibilities and, as investigators go through their process they will be able to make that determination. But right now we are investigating two separate dead bodies found in different locations here in De Soto, and we're working those as separate cases," Erickson said.
A lawyer for the family of missing Brad Cook says the body found Tuesday matches the description of the 22-year-old Olathe man, who has been missing since Oct. 20.
Thursday, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office confirmed the body was Cook's.
Authorities said they are trying to figure out if the man found near the apartment complex lived there or in one of the nearby homes. They said they will have more answers after autopsies are performed Thursday.
