Chapel Hill Police have no new information to share about UNC student Faith Hedgepeth's murder. And in the wake of her death and the sexual assault reported near campus Saturday, some UNC students are concerned about personal safety.
"I think the fact that there's been two attacks in about a week is really concerning," says UNC senior and WCHL intern Kathleen Janes. She says she started leaving the library early last week; she used to stay until midnight or later, but not any more.
"Now I'll try to head back around 11," she says. "I know that's not much of a difference, but there's generally more people out on campus during that time...so I just feel a little safer."
Nineteen-year-old Faith Hedgepeth was found dead in her off campus apartment two weeks ago. The police have been incredibly tight lipped about the investigation, going so far as to have a judge suppress documents related to the case, including the 9-1-1 call made when her body was discovered.
Though the police haven't released any new information about Hedgepeth's death, Chapel Hill Police Sgt. Josh Mecimore says that doesn't mean they don't have any leads.
"It doesn't mean that we're not getting some information--it just means that we don't have any right now that we can release without possibly jeopardizing or negatively influencing the investigation," he says.
Police also have no new information on the sexual assault reported Saturday.
But not everyone on campus is concerned. Senior Stella Strohmeier says these two events haven't changed anything.
"I still feel safe on campus," she says, "because those were two very distinct instances. It's not like there are tons of people going out and doing that to other people."
Mecimore reiterated that Hedgepeth's death is not considered a random crime.
"But I can't say with any level of certainty that the person responsible is a threat to anybody else," he says. "We just don't believe that it was a random act in this situation."
But while police have maintained that the greater community is not in danger, Mecimore says people should always remain vigilant in regards to their personal safety.
"I think the only thing you can do is keep practicing good habits with regard to personal safety--trying not to walk by yourself at night, use the buddy system, and make sure that everyone in your group is accounted for," he says.
If you have any information about Faith's death, call a tip-line at 919-614-6363 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515 . All callers who wish to remain anonymous will be allowed to do so.
