Neither teen killed in a two-vehicle accident last week was wearing a seat belt, Boone County sheriff's authorities said today.

Lt. Jerry Ashens shared a few more details about the collision that claimed the lives of Belvidere North cheerleaders Brenda Gutierrez, 16, of Poplar Grove and Thalia C. Arredondo, 16, of Loves Park.

Ashens said Gutierrez was driving a Chevy Cavalier about 5:30 p.m. Friday and was traveling south on Illinois 76 when she lost control in a curve.

The car traveled into the northbound lane and was struck on the passenger side by a Chevy sport utility vehicle.

The SUV driver, Gonzalo Tellez of Poplar Grove, suffered a broken leg. He and three family members in the SUV were taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with injuries that were not life-threatening. Tellez, who was cited for driving without a valid driver's license, is still in the hospital.

Arredondo and Gutierrez were pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary autopsy results showed they died from chest and abdominal trauma.

The crash occurred about a mile away from the high school. The two were en route there to cheer at Belvidere North's boys varsity basketball game with Auburn.

Authorities said slick roads may have been a factor in the accident.
