Police in Howard County are investigating the death of a teenager found in a home near Judson.

Medics found 19-year-old Tanner Barton dead in a home in the 7900 block of West CR 00 NS around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. They responded to the home after a 911 call for an unresponsive male.

Police believe Barton was a close friend of the family who owned the home and was staying there overnight. He fell asleep on the floor of the home's basement early Sunday morning and was discovered some time later.

Barton was a freshman at Marian University in Indianapolis, where he was also a member of the school's football team.

"On behalf of everyone at Marian University, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to Tanner's family and friends. The loss of such a promising student and athlete deeply saddens and affects us all. He will be greatly missed by his coaches, professors, and many friends," Marian University President Daniel Elsener wrote on the school's website Sunday. "Please join me in keeping Tanner's parents, Jeff and Michele, his family, and his friends in your thoughts and prayers throughout the coming days."

Barton was a 2011 graduate of Northwestern High School in Kokomo.

Interviews and evidence gathered at the scene revealed that Barton had consumed alcohol at the residence, but it is not known how much. Police say there were no apparent injuries to the teenager. An autopsy and results of toxicology testing are pending.

Marian University announced they will make grief counselors available on campus Monday at the Learning and Counseling Center in Clare Hall. Students may also call the LCC at (317) 955-6150 . An on-campus memorial service is being planned for later in the week.
