David Bonaskiewich was walking his dogs in his wooded neighborhood just south of Allentown on Thursday evening when one of the dogs seemed determined to show him something.
The dog led him to a woman's body along Lanze Lane in Salisbury Township. According to authorities, it was homicide victim Kimberly Cardona, 20, of Whitehall Township, a 2011 graduate of Dieruff High School in Allentown.
"She was at the end of the road, right before the last drive[way]," Bonaskiewich said. "She was dumped over the bank lying in a fetal position away from the road."
At first he thought he was looking at a discarded blow-up doll, he remembered, but he decided she "looked too real." And then he knew.
He immediately called his wife, Salisbury Township assistant manager Cathy Bonaskiewich, who contacted township police at 8:30 p.m. Soon officers converged on Lanze Lane, a dead-end road that runs parallel to and 50 feet south of Interstate 78.
By Friday afternoon, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim had ruled Cardona died of blunt force trauma and sharp force trauma. Authorities said she was attacked, but stopped short of saying she was beaten and stabbed. They still were reviewing the evidence.
Grim said she was killed sometime after 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The investigation appears to be focused on a 25-hour window between the last time Cardona's friends and family saw her and Bonaskiewich's finding of her body in the 2700 block of Lanze Lane.
The road is just west of I-78's Summit Lawn exit at W. Rock Road, one of the more secluded spots near Allentown.
Bonaskiewich said he did not disturb the body, which was at the bottom of an embankment about 51/2 feet deep. Although Cardona was not visible to vehicles on the road, he said, it did not appear that whoever left her made any attempt to cover her.
Her body was clothed, but not wrapped in a blanket or something similar, Bonaskiewich said. He saw no blood, he noted.
Meanwhile, Cardona's relatives were becoming alarmed at her failure to return home. About 9:45 p.m. Thursday, family members began posting Facebook messages that she was missing. Her sister-in-law posted a request for help in locating her.
Cardona's sister made a similar Facebook plea around 5:50 a.m. Friday.
Kimberly Cardona posted her last Facebook comment Wednesday, wishing all her friends a happy Fourth of July.
Outside Cardona's Whitehall townhouse Friday evening, a woman said the family was making funeral arrangements and was not ready to talk publicly about her death.
