An off-duty Marion County sheriff's deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 5.
Oregon State Police say Tyler Chapman, 40, of Salem, was traveling northbound near milepost 244 Sunday when he lost control trying to stop for the traffic ahead of him.
A truck coming up behind him hit the senior deputy after he fell onto the road.
It happened just after 1:30 p.m. about 10 miles north of Albany.
Chapman was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
He was wearing a helmet.
Chapman leaves behind a wife and two children.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office released a statement Sunday saying: "We share with his family the grief of his passing as he was also apart of our law enforcement family. Tyler was beloved by his peers and known for his infectious sense of humor. He was consummate professional, dedicated and committed to training and educating law enforcement officers of the future. He will be sorely missed."
Chapman was born in California but graduated from Sprague High School in Salem.
He served in the United States Navy before pursuing a career in law enforcement.
He served with the Gervais and Mt. Angel police departments before joining the Marion County Sheriff's Office. He had worked there for 13 years.
