A College of Charleston student who fell to his death Sunday apparently slipped from a ladder while leaving a stargazing session on the roof of a Corrine Street home, Charleston police said.
New details about the fatal fall are contained in supplemental reports on the incident that have been released by Charleston police.
A resident of the home told police that 23-year-old Spencer Pitts was looking at the stars with several friends when he slipped and fell over the edge at 3:25 a.m. Pitts, of Greenwich, Conn., plunged three stories to the sidewalk below, police said.
Pitts, a senior economics major and a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, died a short time later at Medical University Hospital, authorities said.
Another resident, Florence Clemons, told police she invited Pitts to the roof and they were only there for about 10 minutes before deciding to leave. To do so, they had to climb down a three-step metal ladder from the roof to a balcony below, police said.
Clemons climbed down first and Pitts followed. He either lost his footing or the stepladder slipped, causing him to fall, she told police.
A man walking in the area reported hearing a loud cracking noise. He then saw Pitts lying on the ground.
Investigators found the ladder lying on the street next to Pitts, along with a pool of blood and a beer can, according to a police report.
Officers also noted that the inside of 23 Corrine St. and the roof were "cluttered with beer cans and bottles of alcohol."
"All witnesses also had an odor of alcohol emanating from their breath and persons," a report stated.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office has said that toxicology tests are still being conducted in connection with Pitts' death.
No foul play is suspected, and no criminal charges are anticipated, police spokesman Charles Francis said.
The College of Charleston has made grief counselors available to all students in need of help coping with the incident, college spokesman Mike Robertson said.
