Ashley Garcia was unable to get out of the 2006 Kia Rio after her friend lost control of it on Calavo Drive near Nordahl Road, in an unincorporated area between San Marcos and Escondido shortly before midnight Monday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office and the California Highway Patrol.

The car crashed through a back yard fence at 1510 Calavo Drive and sunk upside down in the pool, the CHP said.
Robert Aaron Anderson, 33, who was driving, got out of the car almost immediately. So far, he has not been cited in the accident, according to the California Highway Patrol, which was in charge of the investigation. An officer said Anderson was suspected of speeding.

Jarit Welles, a 22-year-old man who lives nearby, dove into the pool, cut Garcia's seat belt and got her out of the water, but she never regained consciousness.
