An Anderson woman accused of causing a crash that killed her passenger was smoking spice at the time, prosecutors said.

Karissa D. Campbell, 23, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of causing death while driving with a controlled substance in her system.

Jeremy Chissel, 32, of New Castle, was killed in February when Campbell was driving southbound on State Road 3 near County Road 775 South and ran off the road and struck a tree.

Police said Campbell admitted that the pair had stopped by a convenience store on Muncie's northwest to buy spice, which she said Chissel usually rolled into cigarettes.

Packages of a variety of the synthetic drug called Mad Hatter were found at the crash site, and Campbell tested positive for the substance, police said.

Her trial is set for October.

Campbell was convicted of public intoxication in Henry County in August.
