A woman and a young girl were killed Friday morning after a car and a dump truck collided in Whatcom County. A boy was also hospitalized.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on State Route 544 at Mecklem Road.

The Washington State Patrol said a 2002 Honda Accord traveling east on SR 544 crossed the center line and hit the dump truck head-on.

The driver of the Honda, 29-year-old Shyla Alsum, died at the scene. Jaidyn Aslum, 6, died on the way to the hospital.

A 7-year-old who was a passenger in the car was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham with serious injuries.

Troopers did not immediately confirm the relationship between the driver and the children. The boy has a different last name than the driver and the girl.

The driver of the dump truck was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The highway was blocked between Noon Road and Everson Goshen Road.
