A 16-year-old West Rowan High School student injured in a longboarding accident Monday morning has died.

Jonah King, 16, of Bob White Road, died today, a hospital official confirmed this afternoon.

King was a rising senior at West Rowan.

The teenager was critically injured about 1:30 a.m. Monday, authorities said, when he crashed riding a longboard — a long skateboard — on Timberlane Trail.

N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper K.G. Barringer said King was being followed by friend Kevin Robinson, who was driving a truck.

Earlier reports indicated King appeared to have been pulled behind the truck. But Barringer said that didn't appear to be the case.

"There was no physical evidence to show that he was pulled or pushed," Barringer said.

Robinson told authorities he was following behind King so the 16-year-old could use Robinson's headlights to see as he rode the longboard in the Summerfield subdivision off N.C. 150.

When emergency crews arrived, King was immediately transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

He stayed in the intensive care unit for more than 24 hours.

Friends and family members took to social media to ask for prayers and express thoughts for the teenager.

Throughout Monday and Tuesday, friends tweeted photos of King and shared condolences.

"Forget the drama & forget mistakes ... those are behind us now. Right now the only thing that matters is an angel named Jonah King," Hayley Overcash tweeted.

Some shared memories, others simply showed respect.

"It is safe to say that no one will ever forget Jonah. As weird as it is to imagine, he's in a much better place," Stefani Cicio tweeted.
