A suspect shot and killed during an attempted jewelry store robbery in San Ramon on Wednesday has been identified as 18-year-old Kibrom Bairu of Hayward, police said.

Investigators say Bairu, brandishing a handgun, was one of four men who stormed the Gold N Treasures jewelry store on San Ramon Valley Boulevard at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, looking to rob the suburban mom-and-pop store.

One of the robbery victims, possibly a worker at the store, shot Bairu with a handgun. Bairu was arrested at the scene and died after being rushed to a nearby hospital, San Ramon police Lt. Dan Pratt said.

There were three people inside the store at the time the suspects entered -- two employees and a customer, Pratt said.

Pratt would not say which person shot Bairu but added, "at this point, it looks like the victims inside the store were acting in self-defense."

The bullet that hit Bairu was the only one fired in the incident, Pratt said. It was not clear where on Bairu's body he was hit, or whether he was shot from the front or the back.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

The three remaining suspects escaped. Pratt said he could not confirm early reports that they fled in a white, four-door 1990s car.

Pratt said he was not aware of any other crimes in Bairu's past.
