The Texas Rangers, New Braunfels Police, Comal County Sheriff's Officers, and local Texas DPS Troopers are all now part of an ongoing investigation into yesterday's complicated series of events that led to the death of an allegedly armed suspect on the main lanes of I-35 here in New Braunfels. The suspect, identified as 30-year old Jaime Lee Almaguer, was first wanted out of San Antonio for a shooting Tuesday night that left his 25-year old girlfriend dead at a San Antonio apartment complex off Wurzbach Road. SAPD tipped off New Braunfels Police that the man may have come to this area to see family members at a home on Falcon Grove in the Quail Valley subdivision north of town, and when officers arrived at that location around 9pm, they discovered that Almaguer had just left on foot. So local officers launched a full on search for the man, including ground and air searches. And they were actually able to make contact with the suspect by cell phone several times in the hours leading up to the confrontation on I-35, where he told negotiators that he was armed and was willing to shoot at officers, if cornered. At about 3:30am, Almaguer was then spotted on foot along the northbound I-35 access road. When officers tried to stop him, he ran, across the access road, then across the northbound main lanes of traffic, over the median, and into the southbound lanes of traffic, where officers say he then made indications that he would shoot at the pursuing officers. Instead, 3 New Braunfels policemen opened fire on Almaguer, hitting him multiple times, and nearby EMS crews pronounced him dead at the scene. Southbound I-35 was immediately shut down so the investigation could begin, and the Texas Rangers were called in to handle the portion of the investigation, looking at the decision by officers to shoot the suspect.

Local police began looking for Almaguer after tips from San Antonio Police and local residents that the man had allegedly shot his girlfriend to death in San Antonio. Fox News in San Antonio reports that that original shooting took place at the Limestone Oaks Apartments on Wurzbach Road late Tuesday night, where they found 25-year old Jennifer Trader with two gunshot wounds to the head. The autopsy on Almaguer at the Travis County Medical Examiner's office was set for yesterday, and some of those findings will likely be released later today.
