21-year-old Justin Barger was shot to death by his mother shortly after 1 a.m. Friday at the family's residence on 1st Avenue Place N.W. in Long View. Justin Barger was killed with a handgun by a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He died at the residence.

Barger's mother, 53-year-old Karen Barger, says the shooting was in self-defense as Barger allegedly attacked his parents while they were sleeping. According to Long View Police, Barger had likely been drinking when the attack occurred.

Barger has a past history with Police for communicating threats, drugs and other misdemeanors. Officers say they have not previously had any run-ins with Barger's parents.

The Long View Police Department is investigating. Results will be turned over to the District Attorneys Office when the investigation is complete.
