A 28-YEAR-OLD Tweed man died after his car left the road and rolled down an embankment off Terranora Road yesterday morning.

Tweed Heads Police said it appeared the black Holden utility, being driven eastbound on Terranora Road about 9.10am by the man, ran off the road and travelled over an embankment before crashing into scrub- land.

The driver, from Terranora and the only occupant of the ute, was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.

Police attended the scene and the road was closed for three hours while investigations were conducted.

The mangled wreck of the ute was towed from the embankment and the body removed about midday.

Builder Mick Workman was the first to notify police.

"We were about 100 metres away in Banora Point when we heard the screech of the tyres and then some heavy cracks. Me and a mate went to check it out," Mr Workman said. "We had to drive by three or four times before we spotted the car because it was so hidden.

Mr Workman said he had grave concerns for the driver when he found the crash site.

"I'm an ex-firefighter and I knew when I saw the car it was going to be bad," he said.

Mr Workman said a doctor who drove by shortly after pulled over to check the?driver's wellbeing.

A nearby resident, who did not want to be named, said she witnesses a lot of careless driving on Terranora Road.

"I see parents taking their kids to school here every morning crossing the double white lines and talking on their mobile phones," she said.

"Speeding is another big problem on this road.

"It was only a matter of time before something like this was unfortunately going to happen."

Inquiries into the incident continue and a coroner's report is being prepared.
