Body in car identified as ex-wife of bridge jumper

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Authorities have identified the burned body found in a car on the Sunshine Skyway bridge as a central Florida woman whose ex-husband drove the car there before jumping to his death.

Lakeland police identified the woman Wednesday as 39-year-old Sheryl Lynn Laird. They say she was fatally shot at her home before being driven to the bridge in the trunk of the car and set on fire.

Authorities said Laird's ex-husband, 38-year-old Robert Laird, died when he jumped off the Sunshine Skyway after setting the fire Monday afternoon.

The couple had a 7-year-old daughter. Court records showed they married in 1998 and divorced in 2006. Sheryl Laird recently sought sanctions against her ex-husband for failing to pay child support.
