University of Rochester officials have acknowledged the identity of a student who died Friday and the school is offering counseling services for students.

Richard Feldman, dean of UR's College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering, said in a message emailed to the college community that the man who died on Halloween night at Mt. Hope Cemetery was sophomore undergraduate Kurt Scheele.

Rochester police officials have not yet confirmed the identification, but they said the death was an apparent suicide.

The body of a man was found burned beyond recognition at the cemetery just before midnight. He apparently set himself on fire. Police found a gasoline can near the body.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Kurt's family and friends. Kurt's brother Eric graduated from the college and is a graduate student on campus," Feldman wrote.

Feldman wrote that Scheele, who is from the Buffalo area, had planned to major in brain and cognitive sciences and in psychology. Scheele was a fraternity member and an athlete. The University flag will be at flown at half-staff Friday.

"I know all of us will do everything that we can to support Kurt's family and friends," Feldman wrote.

He said a private service will be held Thursday and a memorial service for the campus community is being planned for Friday. Details of the public service will be announced when they are finalized.
