A former Mt. Vernon teen has been charged with two counts of first degree murder in connection with the death of her 3-year-old daughter.

Karrae Starr, 18, of Bayer Circle in Herrin, was arrested Saturday night after emergency medical personnel responded to her home on a report of an unresponsive child. Bianca Nicole Starr was taken to Herrin hospital, where she was pronounced dead, and Karrae Starr was arrested on charges of aggravated battery of a child.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday.

Charges against Starr were upgraded Monday from aggravated battery to two counts of first degree murder, and Starr is being held in the Williamson County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Starr, who attended Carbondale High School from 2005 to 2007, is a student at John A. Logan College in the nursing program.

Bianca Starr was born in Mt. Vernon, and her grandparents and great-grandparents are Jefferson County residents.
