An 18-year-old woman might have been speeding on her way to work late Monday morning when she wrapped her vehicle around a tree, killing her.

Robin Dodds of Brazoria was on her way to work in Lake Jackson when she apparently lost control of her red 1998 Ford Contour on CR 400 at about 11:30 a.m., Department of Public Safety Trooper Joel Gonzalez said.

"She lost control and went into a side-skid into the ditch and struck the tree on the left side," Gonzalez said. "It flipped the vehicle; speed was probably a factor."

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

A passerby stopped at the accident site and called emergency personnel for help, he said.

Two hours after the accident, Dodds was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Sharon Fox, Gonzalez said.

Dodds' family was notified of her death and came to the scene soon after, he said, but they left after she was pronounced dead.

Gonzalez said it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor. From the look of the scene afterward, Gonzalez said he did not think Dodds was wearing a seatbelt.
