An 18-year-old student at Crook County High School died of a gunshot wound to the head in an apparent suicide today in the school's parking lot, Prineville police said.

The victim was Marc Adam Hollingsworth, an 18-year-old student who recently transfered to Crook County High School, according to school administrators.

A fellow student found the young man lying in the lot, police said. No other students were involved, Prineville Police Chief Eric Bush said, according to the Oregonian.

Authorities discovered a handgun at the scene, and the school was locked down as a precautionary measure, though students left at their normal time.

Counselors were on hand at the school this afternoon and will return Friday, Bush said. The school has about 1,000 students.

Prineville is a small community approximately 45 miles northeast of Bend.
