A North Caddo High School cheeleader was killed and another was critically injured in a crash Wednesday night, the Caddo sheriff's office says.

Amanda Sparaco, 17, of Oil City died from injuries she received in the accident just after 9 p.m. at U.S. Highway 71 at state Highway 170, sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said.

Sparaco was a passenger in a Chevrolet Suburban being driven by Zachary Lewis, 17, of Vivian. Lewis had just dropped another teen off at a residence on state Highway 3049, which turns into state Highway 170 at an intersection.

"Caddo sheriff's traffic investigators say Lewis' vehicle was heading west at the intersection when he failed to yield and was struck by a southbound tractor-trailer rig driven by Daniel Bennett, 60, of Chouteace, Okla.," Chadwick says in a release. Bennett was hauling a trailer full of metal.

Lewis was flown to LSU Hospital in Shreveport by Life Air Rescue helicopter for treatment of life-threatening injuries, Chadwick said.

Bennett and Sparaco were taken to North Caddo Hospital by North Caddo Emergency Medical Services; Sparaco was pronounced dead at the Vivian hospital, Chadwick said.

Both vehicles involved in the crash are at the sheriff's vehicle yard at 4910 North Market St. pending completion of the investigation. No charges have been filed, Chadwick said.
